When girls of 8 years of age and boys of 9 years show early signs of puberty, the condition is known as precocious puberty. Puberty is usually associated with signs like the enlargement of breasts, sudden growth in height, menstruation, enlarged testicles, growth of pubic hair, development of acne, rapid growth of bones and muscles and the ability to reproduce. The causes of precocious puberty are infections, hormone disorder, tumors, abnormalities of the brain, and injuries to the brain. It is classified into two types- central precocious puberty and peripheral precocious puberty.
HOW IS PRECOCIOUS PUBERTY DIAGNOSED?
The majority of girls simply start puberty too early, and less than 1% of girls with precocious puberty have the inherited condition.
