Periodontal disease, which leads to the progressive loss of the bone that supports teeth, can be a cause for loose teeth. Because of this condition, biting and chewing can lead to Occlusal Trauma or bite injury, which damages the gums and the periodontal ligament. Occlusal trauma is of three types- primary, secondary, or a combination of both. Loose teeth occurs because of secondary occlusal trauma i.e. through normal chewing and eating, which applies force on the gums. It can be treated with biological and mechanical treatment. In case of biological treatment, the condition is first diagnosed and then a suitable environment is created for healing. Mechanical treatment involves processes like occlusal adjustment or splinting.

Repositioning of teeth is also done in case of a loose tooth, but is a complicated process.
