Pain and swelling around the knees, commonly experienced by athletes, military personnel and cyclists is a condition known as Iliotibial band friction syndrome (ITBFS). Weak hip muscles, poor foot arch control, sudden increase in running practice and weak hip rotators may result in this condition. However, it is confused with normal knee injuries quite often. When an affected person bends his/her knee up to 45 degrees, he/she experiences pain outside the knee. Physiotherapy helps in improving the condition.
HOW IS ILIOTIBIAL BAND FRICTION SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
It is one of the principal causes of lateral knee pain in most runners.
