Fungi are small spores that are found on the earth. There are around 1.5 million types fungi found all over the world. Mushroom is one type of fungi which causes no harm. However, other types of fungi cause diseases in human beings. Some fungi cause deadly disease of lungs and even the brain. Some fungi cause skin infections. These infections are common so let us check out these infections.
Fungal skin infections are:
1. Athletes foot – here the warm and damp areas between toes become scaly, red and itchy. Slowly they form blisters too. This fungal infection is caused when you take a shower in community baths or swimming pools. If you don’t wash your hand after touching your infected feet then it is likely to spread to other parts of the body.
2. Nail infection-here the infection begins at the edge of the nails and spreads rather slowly. Nails become thick and wearing shoes become difficult.
3. Ringworm – normally exposed parts of the body like hands, legs and face get the ringworm rash. The area of the skin becomes red and ring shaped.
4. Yeast Infections – these infections develop in the folds of the skin near the armpit and groin. Diaper rash among babies and vaginal infection in women are a type of yeast infection.
Many of the skin infections caused by fungi cause the skin to become itchy and scaly. Sometimes the infections cause the skin to become fine almost like eczema and as such is often confused with eczema.
Almost anyone healthy or otherwise is prone to fungal skin infections. Everyday thousands of spores are found in the environment and every one of us breathes them. However, only some people get infected. It is common for people with weak immune system to easily get effected with the fungus.
Treatment for fungal skin infections is topical creams recommended by doctors. It is wise to visit a doctor when you develop a fungal skin infection. The doctor will take a sample of the skin which is itchy and check it under the microscope to confirm whether it is a fungal infection.
A general practitioner is sufficient to cure any fungal skin infections. They normally prescribe topical creams which are available with pharmacists. Regular application of the creams can reduce the infections and cure them.
