A black eye is a small, dark blemish that occurs around the eye due to an injury or accident. Also known as, Periorbital Hematoma, it is caused due to injury to the face rather than the eye. Bleeding underneath the skin or eyes can cause black eyes as the injured area gets swollen and discolored. Usually no major medical attention is not required. Applying an icepack in the swollen area can cease bleeding and reduce swelling.

Most black eyes are relatively minor injuries and may heal on their own within a few days.
