Stem Cell Therapy: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Stem cells are referred to as the smart cells of the body. They possess the capacity of multiplying and indefinitely renewing themselves into specialized cells. This is the reason why stem cells can develop into skin tissue, fat, brain, liver and cardiac muscles directly helping by treating the injured area. Furthermore, there are two legitimate reasons why you would require a stem cell therapy. Firstly, there must be a case where the doctor intimidates a patient that he would be unable to help him by treating his chronic pain or illness from which he is suffering. Secondly, you would want to update yourself with the latest medical advances.

Stem cell therapy is known as the future of medicinal advancement. In today’s world medical science has happened to have explored the latest ongoing technology related to the indications of major symptoms which are absolutely incomparable to traditional therapies. Stem cells are known as the unique cells of the body. Hence, you should compare your body with an apartment and the stem cells to the maintenance men. Stem cell therapy is equipped with three significant criteria. These include the fine division of cells infinitely without the loss of character, the order of number is maintained with each division, and the last one is that these cells are able to differentiate into different cells belonging to different origin. Whenever the body faces a crisis, it calls for help. The resident stems cells will migrate at the injured site for repairing the damage. As the disease progresses, an additional of them is required for the purpose of fast healing.

How is the treatment done?

Every individual is born in a different manner. Some are born with a neurological disorder while others are born perfectly healthy. And fortunately enough, they remain healthy for the rest of their life. On the other hand, there also are people who develop degenerative or neuromuscular disorders. The latter is where Stem Cell Therapy (SCT) comes into action. Stem Cell Therapy is characterized by the treatment for several non-serious to life-threatening disorders by the usage of stem cells. These cells are procures from multiple difference sources are potentially used for the treatment of more than 80 disorders in total, including degenerative and neuromuscular disorders. Hematopoietic disorders like storage disorders, sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia, MDS, thallassemia, leukemia and many more are known to manifest with a number of systematic complications. This happens when the bone marrow is affected. As a result, the treatment is done by the reconstitution of the defective bone marrow from a donor (either from bone marrow of a parent or cord blood) followed by permanently overcoming the disorder.

The conventional treatment methods aren’t showing a lot of benefits for many degenerative disorders as compared to the stem cell therapy all over the world. This therapy has been showing promising results only due to its unique and amazing features. This treatment method is speedy, safe and is often completed quickly (in a day or two).

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

A person with serious neuromuscular, degenerative disorders, or an injury which the doctors have completely given up on, is eligible for the treatment. A person interested in getting updated with the latest medical advancement is also eligible for the treatment.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Someone who is unable to obtain the bone marrow sample of his/her biological parent (donor) is not eligible for the stem cell therapy.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, this procedure is quite safe. Only after a complete medical examination, the process is started. Some patients experience soreness and pain after the treatment is finished. The body will not reject the therapy as your own blood (autologous), fat and bone marrow is used.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The post treatment guidelines are to take proper medications for the pain and soreness, proper rest and ice application of the sore area. These methods are generally sufficient after the treatment as the total amount f treatment is only for a day or two with an instant healing effect, and it does not require a lot of care thereafter. In case you find something unusual or improper, follow up with your health care specialist for further help and advice.

How long does it take to recover?

The patients generally notice improvements two weeks after the treatment followed by a continuous period of a few months for the stimulation of growth and connective tissue.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The approximate cost of stem cell therapy ranges between Rs. 7,00,000 to Rs. 8,00,000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of the treatment are permanent as the injured area along with the neuromuscular and degenerative disorder will start to heal. The healing process will soon come to an end after a period of 4 to 5 months or even a year. But in case the patient injures himself/herself again, they will require another conventional treatment or stem cell therapy.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are multiple home remedies and natural treatment methods available as alternatives for stem cell therapy. Milk thistle is a kind of herb that originates from the Mediterranean region. This herb is commonly used for the reduction of the growth of cancerous cells and for the treatment of liver ailments. Other treatment methods include the intake of turmeric, Korean Red Ginseng and olive leaf.

Safety: High Effectiveness: Very High Timeliness: Medium Relative Risk: Medium Side Effects: Low Time For Recovery: Medium Price Range:

Rs. 7,00,000 - Rs. 8,00,000.

5 Important Things You Should Know About Orthopaedic Stem Cell Treatment

Orthopaedic stem cell treatment is an advanced branch of medicine, which can only be performed by a handful of physicians across the planet. If you are considering the surgery and the treatment, you should first know the important factors that can have an impact on the same.

Outlined below are 5 things you should know about the treatment before you schedule the surgery.

  1. Source of the stem cell: The source from which the stem cells have been extracted play a huge part in determining how successful the surgery would be. In case of orthopaedic stem cell treatment, the best place to extract the cells from is the bone marrow. However, in some cases, these cells may be taken from fatty regions of the body and not the bone marrow. This will eventually have an impact on the outcome of the surgery. Bone marrow cells are much more proficient at repairing damages of the bones than stem cells from any other source.
  2. The technique for extracting stem cells: A procedure called the bone marrow aspiration or BMA is used to harvest the stem cells from the bone marrow. However, there is a correct way of doing it and a not so correct way of doing it. For instance, the stem cells need to be harvested using special needles and from several high density spots inside the bone.
  3. Placing the stem cells in the right spot: Just extracting the stem cell properly is not enough. It also needs to be injected at the right place through the correct procedure. The surgeon will use advanced machineries to conduct the surgery, which are essential for the success of the treatment. These could include the use of c-arm fluoroscope, other one is called the ultrasound or may be even an arthroscope.
  4. The correct dosage: This is a gray area, as knowledge needs to be further refined about the precise dosage required for the treatment. Specialised instruments and digital centrifugation systems help in  acquiring and concentrating the necessary amounts of stem cells for the procedure.
  5. Understanding that the treatment works: Since stem cell treatment of any kind is a fairly new concept, most people feel that it may not work as advertised. However, if you go to a reliable facility where such surgeries are performed, you will get to know that not only does the treatment work but there have been several patients whose quality of life has improved greatly. Joint preservation surgery is the field which specialises in management of various conditions by these procedures.

Stem Cell Therapy - How It Is Good For Hair Regrowth?

The innumerable problems, complications, and embarrassment that severe hair fall and baldness brings along need no special mention. However, with the advancement of science and technology, effective treatments and therapies have come up to deal with the situation. One of the advanced hair treatment therapies used to deal with hair fall and baldness is the Stem Cell Therapy.

The Stem Cell Treatment is a minimally invasive procedure mainly used to stimulate the hair follicles, ensuring its regrowth. Stem cells, present at the root of the hair are known to promote the hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles. In the case of severe hair fall or baldness, the stem cells either gets depleted or do not mature enough to facilitate the hair growth. In stem cell therapy, the hair loss or baldness is treated by processing these stem cells (hair follicles collected from the affected person) in labs to ensure an increase in the stem cells.

Steps involved in the stem cell therapy for hair regrowth
The stem cell therapy is hassle-free and the time involved in the entire treatment varies from individual to individual (depending on the extent of the hair loss). In people with not so severe hair loss, around two sessions are needed for the entire stem cell therapy.

  • In the first sitting, the practitioner will collect some of the hair follicles. The hair follicles, as we all know contain the stem cells. What the therapy does is to culture and process the hair follicles, ensuring an elevated production of the stem cells.
  • The second sitting (15-20 days post the first sitting) involves the careful insertion of the improved and cultured hair follicles with increased stem cells into the scalp of the affected person. The increased stem cells will now act as a catalyst, ensuring hair regrowth.
  • In most people, the positive results start showing within a month of the stem cell therapy (the full hair restoration takes between 3-4 months).

Advantages of stem cell therapy for hair regrowth
The stem cell therapy, one of the latest techniques used in hair restoration has been a revelation from the word go.

  • Many scientists and health practitioners are of the opinion that this treatment is the safest and the best solution to deal with hair loss and baldness.
  • The stem cell therapy also plays a pivotal role in improving the hair texture to a great extent.
  • A minimally invasive procedure, there are negligible side-effects associated with stem cell therapy.
  • As compared to the other hair restoration procedure, recovery is quick in the case of stem cell therapy.

The stem cell therapy has benefitted many people worldwide to deal with the problem of hair loss with elan. Research is still going on to further improve its effectiveness.

Stem Cell Therapy - Is It The Cure For Baldness?

Hair are an indispensable part of one’s aura and personality. To have thick and voluminous hair adds so much to one’s beauty. It defines one’s image and confidence. Baldness, losing and thinning of hair is of great concern for both men and women. In a stressful and competitive world like ours, people start losing hair at very young age. This is often attributed to our lifestyle, environmental pollution, inadequate sleep, excessive smoking and drinking. Losing hair is depressing as it is a sign of ageing. The cosmetic market today is flooded with products; be it hair fall control shampoos, serums, conditioners or hair masks. Many Ayurvedic remedies are also available for users to try.

However, the truth is nothing offers a tangible permanent solution than a surgery. However, Surgery comes with a host of side effects and is neither advisable nor affordable. Thus, the question is; whether there is any hope for people who want to regain their hair? Well, Aesthetic Medicine is undertaking lots of research on a possible cure for this condition. Recent Research suggests that adult stem cells have the ability to produce different stem cells, thus cells from hair follicles can be utilised to stimulate hair growth. One such research at the University of Pennsylvania, January 2014 described a method to convert adult cells into epithelial stem cells, responsible for hair growth. Many such studies on adult stem cells are underway.

Stem cells are tiny microscopic cells responsible for repair and regeneration of aged and damaged tissues. By now, everyone knows the amazing benefits of stem cells from umbilical cord, thanks to the Stem Cell Banking concept. The good news is that ongoing research on Stem Cells as a non-surgical way to treat baldness now offers a ray of hope for people suffering from hair loss issues.

Stem Cell treatment helps regeneration of damaged hair follicles thus, promoting hair growth. The procedure is simple and painless. It has minimal side effects and requires no hospitalisation. The live hair follicles from the patient’s hair are used to harvest stem cells. The processed stem cells are then carefully and slowly injected into balding areas with the help of very fine needles. Local anaesthesia is used to avoid any pain or discomfort.

Results in the form of visible hair growth, as well as improvement in density and thickness, are visible within a month. Stem Cell treatment is undoubtedly one of the advanced treatments for hair loss available today. Many clinics/ hospitals are now beginning to offer stem cell therapy for hair loss treatment. However, if hair loss is your concern, It is best to consult an expert, ask a free question and get your scalp examined and be assured of the usefulness of this therapy for yourself before deciding to go for the treatment.

Types And Treatment of Arthritis

What are the Different Kinds of Arthritis and How to Treat Them?

Arthritis is a very common medical condition that affects a lot of adults as they age. It occurs due to inflammation of the joints, which can be caused by a number of factors such as aging, injury or infection. There are over a hundred different kinds of arthritis that cause various sorts of problems to those affected. However, this condition can be broadly classified into two major types, which include the following:

  1. Osteoarthritis- Also known as degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is the most common kind of chronic condition to affect the joints. This occurs when the cartilage that surrounds the joint wears away and allows the ends of bones to rub against each other causing immense pain and is often accompanied by inflammation and swelling. The primary cause of osteoarthritis is aging, obesity and occurs mainly due to pressure on the joints.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis- This is the most common type of arthritis that occurs due to joint inflammation. It is an autoimmune condition, which means that it is caused by a dysfunction of the immune system that leads to inflammation of the joints. Chronic inflammation causes joint deformities and even the development of rheumatoid nodules on the skin around the joint. Two-thirds of patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis are women.

Depending on the nature of the condition and the age and medical history of the patient, diagnosis and treatment of arthritis varies. Although there is no permanent cure for arthritis, especially the type caused by aging, a number of remedies exist that provide relief from pain.

Some of the common methods of treatment for arthritis are:

  1. Medication- Some medicines provide relief from the pain of arthritis if it is not too severe. These include painkillers, anti-inflammatory pills, sprays, and ointments, etc. In case of high-intensity pain, codeine is often prescribed.
  2. Stem Cell Therapy or PRP Therapy- This method involves drawing platelets from the patient's own blood and injecting it into the inflamed parts of the joint in order to repair damaged muscles and alleviate pain. This treatment stimulates natural healing process of body and is free from side effects.
  3. Injections- A number of anti-inflammatory substances and lubricants can be injected into the affected joints to decrease pain. Ozone gas injections or hyaluronic acid injections are an example of this.
  4. Intramuscular Stimulation- Targeted treatment of tender points in muscle help to relieve muscle spasm associated with arthritis and also improves joint mobility and decreases pain.
  5. Surgery- In extreme cases, surgical procedures are resorted to for treating arthritis. However, successful surgery cannot always be guaranteed and it comes with its own set of risks. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a rheumatologist and ask a free question.
