Sexual Weakness: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Characterized by the inability to have or maintain an erection, sexual weakness or erectile dysfunction (ED) is fairly common in men. There are plenty of treatment options available that men can employ in order to cure themselves of this condition. Treatment options vary from simple methods such as oral medications and injections to more complex ones such as surgeries, implants and pumps. However, before a treatment option can be zeroed in on, a doctor will conduct diagnostic tests to find out exactly what's causing the problem. After an analysis of the cause, the most suitable treatment option will be chosen by the doctor with the consent of the patient. That said, the chosen treatment option wil not only vary on the basis of the cause but also the severity of the condition. Patients will be explained the risks and benefits of each of the treatment options so that they can make the best choice with the help of the doctor and know what they are getting into.

How is the treatment done?

A number of oral medications are prescribed for sexual weakness in men. These include sildenafil (viagra), vardenafil and more. They help in increase the blood flow to the penis so that an erection can be maintained in response to sexual stimulation. Some of the other medications prescribed though need to be injected instead of taking orally such as alprostadil, which is injected into the base of the penis with the help of a needle. Another treatment method, known as alprostadil urethral suppository, works by placing a suppository inside the man's penis in the penile urethra with the help of a special applicator. Apart from the above, penis pumps and surgeries are also an option. Penis pumps work by placing the tube of the pump on the penis and using the pump given to suck out air that is present in the tube. The vaccuum created increases blood flow to the penis, thereby helping in gettng an erection. Once the man gets the erection, he is supposed to slip a tension ring on the base of his penis and keep it there to maintain the erection. Lastly, penile implants involves the process of surgically attaching devices on either side of the man's penis. These implants are made up of malleable or inflatable rods. These rods help in controlling the length and duration of an erection. The operation is performed with the help of general or local anethesia.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Men who suffer from sexual weakness and do not have heart diseases are eligible for medications used to treat sexual weakness. Potential candidates for surgery and penis pumps include those on whom medications did not prove to be effective.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Oral medications should not be taken by men who suffer from heart diseases or chest problems as well as very low blood pressure. To know about who is not eligible for a penile implant, one should consult their doctor.

Are there any side effects?

Different treatment methods for sexual weakness have different side effects. For example, side effects of oral medications include nasal congestion, blurry vision, flushing, stomach upset and backache. Side effects of injections urethral suppository include prolonged erection and mild bleeding as well as pain and formation of fibrous tissues in the penis. The side effects of penile implants include infection, formation of scar tissue, uncontrolled bleeding etc.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Men who take oral medications or those in the form of injections or urethral suppositories need to follow any post treatment guidelines as such although they should consult with their doctors about that. Those who go through penile implants must rest for a couple of days after the operation and should not lift anything heavy either until their doctor allows them to.

How long does it take to recover?

Once a man gets an erection with the help of medications (oral or otherwise), they may last for about half an hour after which the penis will go back to its normal flaccid state. Recovery from a penile implant surgery takes about 6 weeks.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Oral medications for sexual weekness cost between Rs. 450 and Rs. 600 for a pack of 10. The Alprostadil self-injection costs roughly Rs. 5,900, while the cost of the penis pump is around Rs. 200 to Rs. 600. A penile implant surgery can set one back by around Rs 1 lakh.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of the penile surgery are permanent. The results of medications, injections, suppositories and pumps are temporary and they have to be used again before sex in order to get results.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

They are plenty of alternative remedies available for sexual weakness. These include exercising, making lifestyle changes, trying out homeopathy or ayurvedic supplments and opting for a testosterone replacement. However, before opting for any of them, one should consult their doctor.

Root-Cause Of Erectile Dysfunction!

Root-Cause Of Erectile Dysfunction!

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a treatable condition and treating it involves locating the root cause of the problem. Here are some of the more common causes of ED, as explained by Ayurveda.

Poor Digestion:

Ayurveda places a lot of importance on the strength of agni, or digestive fire. If your digestive fire is strong, it leads to the proper formation of all the dhatus. The reverse is also true. Poor digestion will affect the quality of the seven dhatus being produced, including rasa, rakhta, mamsa, meda, asthi, majja, and shukra. This means that the strength of your digestive fire could ultimately affect the shukra dhatu, which is in charge of reproductive health, and lead to erectile dysfunction.

Rajasic Psychology Led Uncontrolled Sex:

Yet another leading cause of ED could be indulging in frequent acts of sex without consuming nourishing food or vajikarana treatment. This often leads to, what Ayurveda describes as, ‘napumsakatwa’, or sexual dysfunction. Too many ejaculations in a brief span of time can lead to loss of energy, strength and shukra dhatu.

Physical Injury or Trauma:

Sometimes, trauma or injury to the nerves, veins, or muscle filaments in the male reproductive system can cause erectile dysfunction. These wounds can disrupt the flow of blood and nutrients, thereby leading to poor performance. Even sexually transmitted diseases, cancer, and tuberculosis can lead to impotence, while lifestyle diseases like diabetes can definitely reduce the quality of your sexual life.

Weak Dhatus:

Finally, ‘ati sthoolatwa’, or obesity, could be another cause of ED. The increase in medha dhatu, or fat, can interfere with the production of shukra dhatu. Also, obese people are known to have increased cholesterol levels in their blood, which has also been linked to impotence.

These are just some of the reasons that could be causing erectile dysfunction. Others include stress, unhappiness in personal or professional life, and psychological conditions.

Erectile Dysfunction - Best Ways To Treat It Well!

With age it becomes difficult for many men to achieve an erection and maintain it. This is known as Erectile Dysfunction. This is not necessarily related to a lowered libido. In many cases, a man may desire sex but not be able to have an erection rigid enough for intercourse. Men with a history of obesityhypertensiondiabetesand smoking are at a higher risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction as they get older. However, this condition can be treated.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Erectile Dysfunction:

Gold Bhasma: Gold Bhasma also known as Swarna Bhasma is prepared from pure gold. Nowadays, the use of technology has mitigated many tedious steps, which one had to undergo during ancient time to prepare it. It is highly effective and is used for the treatment of infertilitysexual weaknesstuberculosiscancer, asthma and many other fatal diseases.

Silver Bhasma: Silver Bhasma is also know as Rajat Bhasma or Raupya Bhasma is a calcified Ayurvedic medicine used not just for treating erectile dysfunction, but also for a number of diseases such as, jaundicefrequent urination, enlargment of spleen, etc.

Both Gold Silver Bhasma are mixed with other Ayurvedic medicines for effective treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Other Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction:

Erectile dysfunction can be treated in a number of ways. Some of these are:

Viagra: Viagra is usually the first form of treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra is a type of drug also known as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. These drugs increase the blood flow into the penis and thus enable an erection. Levitra and cialis are other forms of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. However, Viagra is a temporary treatment and has a side effect that it is a habbit forming drug.

Penile Injection: If a man cannot take oral medication, a penile injection is the best form of treatment. Here, medication is directed into the side of the penis. This dilates the arteries and allows blood to flow in. thus it instantly initiates an erection.

Intraurethral Suppositories: This involves placing a soluble medicated pellet into the urethra. This increases the blood flow into the penis and will create an erection in 10-15 minutes. This form of medication is rarely used.

Vacuum Pump: A vacuum pump is another common form of treatment for this condition. It consists of a plastic cylinder that is placed over the penis and a pump that removes the air within the cylinder thus forcing blood to flow into the penis. An elastic ring is then slid onto the base of the penis to hold the erection. The ring must be removed after a maximum of 30 minutes.

Surgical Implants: There are two types of surgical implants that can be beneficial to men who have not benefitted from medication. The first is an inflatable pump that can manually pump fluid into cylinders within the penis. The second is a malleable prosthesis.

Lifestyle Changes: Obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure, excessive alcohol, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle can also be the reason a man cannot hold an erection. Addressing these factors by making conscious lifestyle changes can improve a man's ability to initiate and maintain an erection. These changes include a healthy diet, regular exercise, lowered consumption of alcohol and losing excessive weight. Living a healthy lifestyle is the only way to lower the risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction in the later years.

How Ayurveda Can Help Treat Sexual Problems?

A number of factors, such as physical ailments, stress, anxiety and even relationship problems can cause sexual problems. Relationship concerns where intimacy and the culmination of the various phases of sexual activity from stimulation to excitement and peak, cannot be possible in a satisfactory manner. So what are the routine sexual problems recognised and treated as per Ayurveda? Read on to know more.

1. Erectile Dysfunction: This condition is also known as impotence and it usually occurs when male patients cannot muster up and retain an erection for long enough to enjoy sexual intercourse. This problem can be fixed with various herbs and condiments including Sanda Oil massage on the testicles and nearby areas in order to increase the blood flow. Also, one can have ginger, honey, drumsticks, milk and other such ingredients for better achievement and retention of an erection for a prolonged period of time during sexual intercourse.

Sanda oil is not available in its pure form and simple branding of this name is not useful. Sanda is a wild reptile, which was boiled in ancient times and fats taken out to make Sanda oil. This is not possible now a days. Instead various 'Tilas' (penis massage oils) prepared by valuable herbs and vegetable oils such as Sesame oil should be used. Tila using Mall (purified arsenic) and egg are also effective. Preparation and use should be as per instructions in classic Ayurveda. Tila is selected as per history, present condition and duration of specific problem

OTC or advertisement products are general products, which do not benefit all. Post application directions are also important otherwise there may be adverse effect of Tila application

2. Premature EjaculationPremature ejaculation is a condition when the male patient may face ejaculation as soon as the intercourse begins, or upon insertion. This happens in an unplanned way and is a sudden occurrence that usually puts a damper on the sexual mood and activity. In Ayurveda, there are various herbs including Ashwagandha and a variety of oil massages that can help in treating this problem.

3. Sexual WeaknessSexual weakness is a condition when the female or male patient may not have the energy to go through with sexual intercourse and may even complain of pain during intercourse. This problem is especially common among women, and may be caused due to fatigue, stress or even low pelvic strength following childbirth or miscarriage. The best way to treat this issue is with the help of proper counselling and therapy that will help in introducing Yogic poses that can strengthen the pelvic area so as to have better sexual strength.

4. InfertilityThis problem may be found in both men and women. Ashwagandha, Vasant Kusumakar Ras, Shilajit and Labub Kabir are some of the herbs and concoctions that can help in increasing virility and the chances of conception by creating better sperm quality and quantity, as well as more effective ovulation.

Most of the sexual problems in Ayurveda are recognised as factors that arise from stress and anxiety. These are recognised as temporary issues that can be fixed with the help of a proper routine of eating, resting and exercising, as well as a healthy diet where the patient stays away from smoking, excessive drinking as well as drug abuse. Before taking any herbal medicines, one will have to consult the doctor and find out about side effects for patients suffering from chronic ailments like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and others.

Fight Stress To Win Sex!

PhD Human Genetics
Sexologist,
Fight Stress To Win Sex!

Stress is one of the most common and strong barriers to sex. Far too many people suffer from sexual problems caused by worry, tension, and exhaustion of stressful life - and yet unaware of it. If you want to perform your best, then never try too hard. Sex should happen by itself. Never force it upon you. Stay relaxed. Keep anxiety out of your body's way, for, any trace of anxiety, tension, fear, worry, distraction etc. can burst the sexual arousal - like a tiny pin prick blowing up a huge balloon.

"When your body is wracked with stress, tension and anxiety, and your mind wracked with worry and distractions, sweet sex is nearly impossible."

Three-way effect:

Stress affects you physically, physiologically and mentally. During stress, blood vessels supplying blood to the penis don’t dilate fully and the sphincter that serves to stop the blood flowing back into the body fails to constrict adequately, both contributing to poor erections. Failed erections cause additional stress. And stress causes more erection problem. And a pattern of failure thus gets established.

In no time, you are conditioned to get an erectile failure every time you attempt sex. That's how stress operates on your bodily responses. Stress disrupts the hormones as well. With stress, the testosterone levels fall, as do the levels of FSH which promotes sperm production. To add fuel to the fire, cortisol, the main stress hormone makes the testes less responsive to a hormone called LH, which tells the testes to produce testosterone.

At an emotional level, stress can lead to anxiety, depression, anger, guilt or a combination of them. Each one of them is a powerful enemy to sex. Together they are an unbeatable combination. The underlying power behind all these reactions is the mind. Reconditioning the brain is the key element in reversing it.

Here is what you can do:

1. Sometimes, simply recognizing that it is the stress that's causing the sexual problems is enough to bring about recovery.

2. Share your anxiety with your partner; Don’t try to hide. Sharing the tension, anxiety and worry will relieve you of the burden and guilt. You will be even more at ease when reassurance is coming from the other side. This paves way for speedy recovery.

3. Remember that very often, even the most complex problems have simple causes and simple solutions. Don’t be too Google-dependent. Google undoubtedly is a powerful search tool but you often do not know which information is right and which is wrong or which explains your situation the best.

4. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help even in small matters. The experience and training of a therapist are what helps you most. Most sexual problems at a younger age do not need elaborate tests. Often simple prescriptions will help quick restoration.

5. Exercise regularly. It boosts confidence, improves hormone levels, increases blood circulation, and enhances self-image. A good self-image is equal to good sex.

6. Get enough sleep. Don’t try sex at the end of the day, when you are down with fatigue and exhaustion. Instead, begin your day with sex (Sex early in the morning is a good one).

7. Take nutritional supplements such as Energex to boost energy and libido.

8. Bust the stress through, meditation, yoga, progressive relaxation, laughter etc.
