What is Medical Termination Of Pregnancy?

Medical termination pregnancy is a method of terminating pregnancy using medicines. It is feasible only up to 9 weeks of pregnancy after that surgical termination takes over. It is one of the safest modes of terminating an unwanted pregnancy. In this method, a set of pills named Mifepristone is given to the patient which can be taken orally or by injection. After this initial medication, another set of pills Misoprostol is given to the patient which can be taken orally or inserted vaginally at home or clinic. Generally, the gap between these two medicines is 3 to 7 days. Along with medicines, antibiotics are also given to prevent any kind of infection. This medication is preceded and followed by a medical examination to determine positive pregnancy and positive abortion. The set of pills given is also known as abortion pills or RU 486 in medical terms.

Earlier the medication used for medical abortion was Methotrexate and Misoprostol together known as MTX. Methotrexate is used in the treatment of cancer and is very strong; hence it was replaced by Mifepristone. A contraceptive pill or the morning-after pill is a birth control pill and is not a medical treatment pregnancy. It is only effective before pregnancy.

How is the treatment done?

The treatment is completely based on medications and hence it can be taken at home as well. The first step after determining the pregnancy is to visit a gynecologist for a medical examination to check all the risks associated with medical termination pregnancy. Once the gynecologist clears you for medical abortion, a pill named Mifepristone is given either through injection or orally. Another pill named misoprostol is given to you in the next 36 to 72 hours which can be taken orally or inserted vaginally.

The mifepristone blocks progesterone from the uterine lining, breaking it down and preventing the pregnancy to grow further. The misoprostol causes contractions and expels the fetus. The process will be followed by extensive vaginal bleeding for the next two weeks. After that, another medical examination is required to ensure the completeness of abortion and check for any complications. There are also ready to take MTP pills available in the market but it is always advisable to consult a gynecologist for any complications.

In the case of cramps, it is preferred to massage and use heating pads to relieve cramps. You can also use medicine like ibuprofen to reduce cramps and pain. Staying hydrated if you are feeling vomiting or diarrhea. You should use a tight-fitting bra to avoid breast tenderness.

How long does it take to recover?

Medical abortion is a lengthy process as compared to surgical termination. The whole process of medical termination pregnancy can take up to 2 to 3 weeks in order to determine the complete result. The total recovery peroid of the treatment can go up to 30 to 40 days.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Ready to use medical termination pregnancy drugs are available in the market for as low as INR 500 but it is not very safe to use them without consultation. Doing a medical termination pregnancy properly in clinics with consultation of a gynecologist may vary from place to place. It may start with as low as INR 4000 and can go up to INR 15000 in different parts of the country.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The medical termination pregnancy is very much effective if done in clinics with proper examination and consultation. It has 90% to 95% success rate under proper guidance of a practitioner. Medical abortions are very successful in early stages of pregnancy. However, after a period of seven weeks the results are not that high.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Alternatives to medical termination pregnancy is hard to find in terms of the effectiveness. There are many Ayurvedic and natural products that are very much effective in terminating early pregnancy.
