Is It Safe for Me to Travel During Pregnancy?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Is It Safe for Me to Travel During Pregnancy?

When you are pregnant, your body is at a very delicate stage as you are carrying another individual inside you. While you are pregnant, there are many restrictions and regulations you must follow to ensure the birth of a healthy child. Bad habits such as smoking and consuming alcohol are strictly prohibited. It is also advised that you should not be in any kind of stress.

When it comes to travelling, it depends on the stage of your pregnancy. You should consult your doctor before travelling and know well about the restrictions that would be imposed, even if you are allowed to travel. The ideal time for you to travel during pregnancy is after the second trimester, when you will be less fatigued.

Here are some tips you should follow if you choose to travel when you are pregnant.
Travelling by car, train:

  1. You should always put your seatbelt on while travelling in a car when you are pregnant. Wear both the lap belt and the shoulder belt to keep yourself and your baby inside, safe and static.
  2. The airbags should always be turned on for safety purpose.
  3. Buses are narrow and should be avoided when you are pregnant. If you are availing a bus, avoid getting up when the bus is moving. In case you have to move, take the support of the railings.
  4. When you are travelling by train, always hold on to the railings and seats while moving about in motion.
  5. Avoid long hour journeys in cars or trains. The maximum travel duration should be not more than six hours, when you are carrying a child.
  6. Make it a point to halt at points to take a walk. This would enhance your blood circulation.

Travelling by air, sea:

  1. This mode of travel is safer than any other travel modes for pregnant women.
  2. Pregnant women can fly until eight months or nine months, after consulting a doctor.
  3. Moving about in an airplane, which is flying is a bad idea for pregnant women and should be avoided.
  4. Always choose an aisle seat while travelling by air. It will make moving convenient in case you need to visit the restroom.
  5. Choose to travel on trustworthy, major airlines with a pressurized cabin and avoid small airplanes or private jets. Do not travel above a height of 7000 ft.
  6. Travelling by sea should be strictly avoided as it causes motion sickness and pregnant women might have nausea.

Travel for pregnant women is restricted in many ways, and all the instructions should be followed.

I am suffering from hair fall but no dandruff, above 100 hair fall per day. I also have pimple problem, and also menstruation problems (irregular and painful with less bleeding) indigestion during periods.

DGO, MBBS

please maintain scalp hygeine , avoid excess of oiling on head and scalp, wash you hair minimum on every alternate days with a good hair shampoo and do apply conditioner ,take iron rich diet and also take multivitamin pills after personal consult with doctor . for menstual irregularity make a chart of its dates for 2-3 months and get back to me.

Her test of thyroid come normal which is 0.95 value of tsh on first July 2016. It was 150 before the three months on first April 2016. Now I cross check her and that also come normal the value of second time is 1.05 tsh value. She is taking throx 75 and before this she was taking throx 100 for this. Now unfortunately she is not getting pregnant it's ninth month of marriage. What is wrong with this matter with her. Thanks a lot to you.

MBBS, DGO, MD, Fellowship in Gynae Oncology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Thyroid report is fine continue with medication. There are lot of factors which affect conception other than thyroid, lifestyle, diet, stress are most common among them. And in many cases even if all reports are fine, it may take time in conceiving, more than a year. So she should try for few more months, making lifestyle & diet modifications.

Dear user. You can have sexual intercourse without using protection and without using any medicines. But there will not be any guarantee that you will not become pregnant. Therefore for avoiding pregnancy, you or your boy friend should use some sort of protection like condoms. Take care.

I am 37 years and married. Last year went through failed IVF. For some time I got my periods regular but for the last 4-5 months the periods have stopped suddenly and there is no pregnancy. I have already been treated for cyst also before the IVF. What would you suggest.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
It seems that you may be a bit over weight. Please try to reduce by 5% and see if the cycles become regular. If your parents/siblings are diabetic, then control your sugar intake. Do yoga regularly. Blood tests like tsh, prolactin and ca 125 should be normal. The periods should be painless. Further cysts if they develop, can be tackled if and when they come. If semen count is normal and your tubes are ok, it may still be possible to achieve normal pregnancy. But usually ivf is done for confirmed tube problem. In that case ivf could be repeated in a better centre.

Suggest natural way to avoid pregnancy after sex. Had sex on 24th april. Got period on 27th april (on time). Still have chances for pregnancy?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Natural ways to avoid pregnancy include sex during safe periods of menstrual cycle. This can be calculated according to your specific dates of menses. If you had periods regularly after having sex then there is no pregnancy for sure.

I am 24 year old girl. My breasts are looking too large. Wearing shall is not comfortable for me. So please suggest any other solution for freely doing my work.

DGO, Advanced Infertility, Post Doctoral Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine
IVF Specialist, Gurgaon
Wear a bra with good support i. E of the correct size. If you are overweight you may consider losing the extra weight and becoming fit. Swimming is a good exercise to help the tightening of the muscles under the breast which in turn will support the breast tissue.

I am a 20 years old female (Medico) I loved a boy who is cousin brother (undergraduate MBBS doctor) to me in relation. We are very close teach other. We spent time together at home many times. He also kissed me. We moved closely as lovers at first. He also loves me but do not move further becoz I m his sister n he knows how feel about him. Now I m in a situation dat I can not live without him &want him in my rest of life as my life partner n I had feelings for him. I love him so much that I m afraid of losing him n marrying soon else other than him. But he tells me that" we are brother n sisters so we can not marry, you should get rid of thought of marrying each other. But I love him stomach that I want him whatever happens. He is a very good person. He is now restricting himself restrict me to move closely as before, thinking that I should not have no more feelings for him as our marriage as we are brother and sisters is not acceptable and should not suffer much when I get married to another person but still he cares me so much as a sister. I even thought of moving away from him but I could not becoz we r that much close and also want to do so as It hurts me alot wen he says me to get rid of this. I even do not bother if we go again somewhere else and marry but he is not. He says dat he can not do that n it is a wrong thing. Now I m in a situation that I cry for him, thinking about this can not concentrate on my studies but I still have feelings n hope for him unlike him. I want him. I love him soo much. Is this right? What should I do to get him. Even I know that it is wrong I can not forget him n I want him forever I feel that life without him is a hell n can not sacrifice loved ones thinking of family though I know we r brother n sisters. Please help me to get rid of this.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
He is right , being cousins or near relatives does pose a risk to gen next through you and social embarassment to parents of both of you. He is a medical student and so are you and you also know about the risks involved , he is staying away and you should also focus your mind on studies , hobbies etc. It is an attraction towards the opposite sex , not love.
