What is the remedy about?

A fever is a medical condition in which your body temperature is well above or below the regular temperature. In general, everyone experiences a fever at some point or the other. However, a fever of an extremely high temperature can be harmful, especially for children and newborn babies. The body uses fever to indicate a problem within your system. Fevers assist the body in fighting against infections, toxins, viruses and bacteria. A fever can result from an infection, virus, inflammation of the joints or muscles, heat exhaustion, tumors and many other conditions. If a fever persists for more than a two days, you should consult a medical professional for treatment.

There are quite a few ways to treat a fever and get your body temperature down to normal. Here are a few home remedies for fever:

  • Basil is a herb that contains anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties that help reduce the fever. To a make a basil solution, boil two cups of water with ginger and ten basil leaves. Keep it on the gas until the solution reduces to half the amount. Take it off the gas and pour it into a cup. Add a teaspoon of honey and drink it twice in a day.
  • Coriander tea: With its anti-biotic properties, coriander counters the effects of a viral fever. To make a coriander tea, boil two cups of water and add a teaspoon of coriander seeds to it. Add sugar to this solution and wait for it to cool down. Strain out the seeds and drink twice or thrice in a day.
  • Cool down with water and a washcloth: Since there is no real way to get rid of a fever; the best solution is to get the body temperature back to normal. In order to do this, get clean washcloths and soak them in cool water. Place this wet washcloth on the forehead or under the arms of the person affected by the fever. Keep checking his/her temperature with the thermometer. The fever should subside within a few hours.

Are there any side effects?

There are very few side effects of these home remedies for fever. However, if you are allergic to Basil, you might suffer from hives, rashes and itchiness. In rare cases, people get rashes, toothaches and stomach problems from consuming coriander seeds in excess. It is advisable to take care while using a cold washcloth that your clothes do not get damp, or else you might catch a cold as well.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

Here are a few post remedy guidelines that you should follow along with the treatment for a fever:

  • The best remedy for a fever is rest. The fever weakens your body and your immune system. So make sure you get plenty of rest to strengthen your body.
  • Drink lots of water and plenty of liquids. Hot soup and herbal tea will help with the weakness or clears away chest congestion. Even after the fever has subsided, it is important to eat healthy to prevent it from recurring.
  • Along with the remedies and medication, you can take a warm bath, or have a sponge bath. The steam helps to clear away congestion.
  • It is important to wear comfortable clothing. Keep the temperature of the room moderate, since a fever lasts longer in a hot and stuffy room.

How long does it take to recover?

A fever usually subsides within a few hours. It might come and go a few times, during a period of two to three days. With the help of these remedies and post-remedy guidelines, you can recover from a fever within a day or two. If a fever persists for more than two or three days, it is advisable to seek medical help.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

These home remedies are effective in getting your body temperature down and back to normal. Most of the time, a fever will resolve itself within a day or two. However, a fever can persist for over a week. A fever is a normal reaction of the body, as it fights against infections. Therefore, it will constantly recur and no treatment can permanently cure a fever.

Is there any training or experts required?

In order to use these home remedies you do not need any special training or expert medical training. These remedies are simple to use and the ingredients are readily available at stores.

Popular Questions & Answers

On 22nd July my son (4 years old) had 101 fevers at night. I consulted homeopathic doctor (with whom I have consulted earlier and found effective in my son’s treatment of cold & cough). While the temperature reduced, my son started coughing. Homeopathic doctor gave him medicines for cough that I continued administering my son for next 2 days. However, I noticed that the cough increased, even though I also kept doing some home made things (like ginger honey paste, tulsi extract) to help reduce the cough fast. Since the cough increased in next 2 days, I assumed the homeopathic medicine is not effective in curing cough though it cured the fever .I therefore, started giving S-mucolite 3 times 3.5 ml (this was prescribed by our allopathic doctor 5 months back when he had chest cold). As expected, I could see significant improvement in frequency and sound of his cough with each passing day. In next 4 days my son’s coughing reduced to bare minimum though he is still coughing with a heavy cough sound and still has minor cold. I wanted to know whether I should continue only with S –mucolite for 3 more days (full course is of 7 days as last prescribed by the doctor during same type of cough). Should I also add a decongestant like Alex junior as prescribed earlier for regular cough? Or with passage of time the cough will subside and there is no need to start any other medicine. Please provide your suggestions?

Pls continue s. Mucolyte. And beware it is not safe to change or alter or add medication by you. It's registered medical practising doctor shall do so that too after seeing the child. Follow up is must after 3-5 days for such issues.
