Navratri is the festival of The Goddess Durga. The nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped in navratri. In the word navratri, nav stands for nine and ratri stands for nights. So, navratri is a festival of nine nights and ten days. In India, we celebrate four types of navratri. They are Chaitra Navratri, Ashadha Gupta Navratri, Magha Navratri and Sharad Navratri. Among these four types of navratri, Sharad Navratri is the most famous navratri which is celebrated all over India. Sharad Navratri is celebrated mostly in the months of September and October. Many people fast during the Sharad Navratri.

There is a great story behind celebrating navratri. According to our holy books, it is said that before many years, there lived a demon king known as Mahishasura. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. After seeing his devotion, one day lord Shiva became happy and blessed Mahishasura with the massive powers. After getting these massive powers from Lord Shiva, Mahishasura started misusing the powers. He started doing the wrong things and also started to trouble the people. After seeing his evilness, the supreme god's (Brahma, Mahesh and Vishnu) decided to create a goddess by combining their powers. Goddess Durga contains all the powers of the supreme god's (Brahma, Mahesh and Vishnu) in the form of mudras and weapons. The nine forms of Goddess Durga are Kushmanda, Shailputri, Skandmata, Brahmcharini, Katyayani, Mahagauri, Kaalratri, Siddhidatri and Chandraghanta.
