Dear lybrate-user, your initial tsh was just above normal range and I think your t4 and t3 were normal at the time of diagnosis. This is called subclinical hypothyroidism. This may remain like this for several months to years before progressing to overt hypothyroidism. Treatment is required only when overt hypothyroidism occurs, and at that time t4 or free t4 will be low and tsh usually > 10 uiu/ml. This is the time to start thyroxine. At present I feel you can stop the thyronorm and monitor free t4 ,tsh and tpo antibodies after 6 months and get back to us on an online consultation regards

Hello, Thanks for the query. TSH 7.5 mcg, is with treatment or this is the value on testing for first time? Because TSH between 6 to 9.9 mU/L is considered as subclinical hypothyroidism and no treatment is advocated. However, if some one is already on treatment then TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L with adequate dosage of levothyroxine. Since this aspect is not clear in your query, I wanted to know specific details. Hypothyroidism is a hormone (Thyroxine secreted by Thyroid gland) deficiency disorder. Since this hormone is required for many metabolic functions of our body and also for normal functioning of brain, there is a need for daily supplement of Levothyroxine fro outside. This is a condition for lifetiem. If treated wit correct dosage, then absolutely easy to manage. Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user, your initial tsh before any treatment is only borderline high and if your t4 and free t4 were normal, the condition is called subclinical hypothyroidism. This may not progress to overt hypothyroidism for a long period of time. Therefore you may not need the tablet I suggest that you check tpo antibodies. If the antibody levels are high then there is a higher r chance of progresing to overt hypothyroidism if antibodies are negative you can stop thyroxine and recheck free t4 and tsh after 6 months and inform the results

Dear lybrate-user, your initial tsh before treatment was 6.31 which is a borderline high value indicating subclinical hypothyroidism. Usually we advice only follow up without meidcation. Let us know if tpo antibodies and free t4 were checked at diagnosis. If not it is worth checking this. I guess you did not notice any improvement in your symptoms with thyrox.

Sudipta ji, Thanks for the query. First thing is if TSH is between 5.5 or 6 mU/L to 9.9 mU/L, then it is considered as subclinical hypothyroidism and usually no treatment is advocated. Only when some patients have some severe symptoms then treatment is initiated. However, you have already been on Levothyroxine, then it is essential to maintain TSH around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which level almost all the symptoms are in check. I am sure while treatment was initiated certain precautions have been already told to you like 1) Take medication early morning on empty stomach and nothing should be taken for at least 1 hour after that. 2)Avoid soy beans and all products containing soy powder or anything related to soy. 3) Avoid bakery items, foods made with maida and junk foods. 4)Exercise for 1 hour to avoid increase in weight. 5)Increase the intake of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Therefore, madam please avoid soy milk. It has antithyroid flavins. If you have any questions please do come back.Thanks.
