Respected Sir Cyclothymia is a fairly rare diagnosis these days, especially because those with symptoms suggestive of cyclothymia do proceed to develop symptoms that would fall under the broader heading of Bipolar Disorder. So, I have to ask, whether your diagnosis was given by a qualified psychiatrist. Anyways, the medicine you mentioned, Lamotrigine, has been shown to have good efficacy in rapid cycling disorders. However its not the only medicine available to treat your condition and there are various other alternatives. So, if you have been taking lamotrigine regularly and still do not find any improvement, please discuss with your psychiatrist regarding changing your medicine. Also regular sleep and exercise, yoga and other relaxation techniques, balanced diet, and interaction with friends/family can help stabilize your mood. Now coming to your 2nd query, I do not think steroids are used in a long term for any chest infection/allergy. However they can be use for a variety of other conditions involving your respiratory system. The reason that I am worried is Steroid use itself may be the factor for your mood symptoms persisting. Hence please discuss with your treating doctor regarding alternative treatment for your chest condition. This will help with your weight gain and also with your mood symptoms.

Cyclothymia -- or cyclothymic disorder -- is a relatively mild mood disorder. In cyclothymic disorder, moods swing between short periods of mild depression and hypomania, an elevated mood. The low and high mood swings never reach the severity or duration of major depressive or full mania episo. In cyclothymia, moods fluctuate from mild depression to hypomania and back again. In most people, the pattern is irregular and unpredictable. Hypomania or depression can last for days or weeks. In between up and down moods, a person might have normal moods for more than a month -- or may cycle continuously from hypomanic to depressed, with no normal period in between. Compared with more serious mood disorders, the mood symptoms of cyclothymia are mild. Depressive symptoms in cyclothymic disorder never reach the criteria for major depression. Elevated mood never reaches the definition for mania. No medicines are specifically approved for the treatment of cyclothymia, although mood stabilizers such as lithium or lamotrigine are sometimes recommended as a possible strategy to reduce mood fluctuations. Antidepressants such Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft are generally not recommended unless someone develops a full major depression, which, by definition, does not occur in cyclothymic disorder. There is also a small risk that antidepressants could trigger or worsen mania symptoms in a subgroup of vulnerable people. Antidepressants alone also are not known to improve fluctuations in mood, which are hallmark characteristics of cyclothymic disorder. Technically speaking, when elevated or depressed moods become severe, a person no longer has cyclothymia, but rather has bipolar disorder. This progression to more severe symptoms can happen, and this is when many people first receive treatment.

Good Morning ~ One of the side effect of Lamotrigene is that it can cause your immunity to reduce and this happens in a handful of many people that get started on the medication. This is usually dose based and an increase in the dose of Lamotrigene may also result in decreased immunity. I believe that you need to have this illness treated by another medication and have your blood levels checked. I also believe that you will do well with medications that are clearly helpful even in the depressive phase and not just the manic phase of cyclothymia or manic depression. Although I cannot make medication suggestions on this forum, kindly book an appointment with me so that I can review your condition and suggest appropriate medication changes.
