Thank you for the query. Hairfall can arise due to - 1. Poor quality of water in an area (increased hardness, increased iron content) 2. Use of lot of chemical based products (shampoos, dyes, colours etc.) 3. Male pattern of hairloss and genetic based - This is due to the efffect of testosterone, hairloss is mainly in the frontal area (forehead). Topical Minoxidil drops may sometimes help. However, at 18 probably this will not be a cause 3. Systemic problems - a. Hypothyroidism - This is a common cause of persistant hairfall. Please get a thyroid profile done. If any abnormality if detected it may be corrected. B. Anemia - This is another common cause (though more common in women). You can get a Hemoglobin checked. If low levels are detected, oral iron supplements can be taken. C. Dandruff - This is a nagging problem. Too dry or too oily scalp can lead to dandruff, and this is quite common. D. Stress/anxiety - Too much of stress can lead to the hairfall, however, it is diffcult to avoid stress and anxiety. Once you rule out a medical disease, you may try out the following a. Drink plenty of water (>2 l/day) - This is needed to maintain the moisture in the hair, and prevent dryness b. Avoid smoking if you do so (i presume that at 18 you are not a smoker) c. Include adequate protein (eg. Egg white) in your diet. Egg white is a source of protein and biotin. D. Intake of anti-oxidants - either in the form of fruits (Indian Gooseberry) or int the foe of vitamin supplements (Vitamin C). You can take a course of vitamin B supplement for a month. Biotin (vitamin B7) is very important component for the health of hair. Eggs, soya, broccoli, cauliflower and avocado are a rich source of biotin. E. Selenium sulphide based shampoos (found in medicine stores) can be used for Dandruff. F. Avoid using too much chemical based products for your hair. Regards.
