Thank you for the query. Dengue is basically a type of viral fever. Viral fever is characterised by high grade fever (usually more than 100 F), with headache, bodyache and generalised malaise. Usually a viral fever runs its course and subsides in a span of 5-6 days. Dengue fever (specially the complicated ones) may be associated with symptoms like bleeding (gum, nasal, bleeding spots under the skin), rashes, dizziness and abdominal pain. In very severe cases of dengue, reduced urine output and shock may be seen. In case youare suspecting dengue you may get the dengue profile done- NS1 Ag, IgM and IgG. You can also get some basic blood tests done like Haemoglobin, Total WBC count and Platelet. Drink sufficient fluid and paracetamol can be taken if temperature >101 F or in case of headache. Avoid aspirin group of drugs. Usually an antibiotic is not needed in a viral fever, unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. Please consult a physician for further advice on medications. Regards.
