Hello, An average Indian male requires about 1-1 1/2 ounce of water per kg of weight. This means about 30-40 ml/kg body weight which comes to 3-3.5 litres/day. Maximum water consumption should be in the first half of the day as there is more sweating in the day time and we are metabolically active then. Having more water in the night leads to urination and sleep disturbance.

Excess of anything can harm the body... 4 Liters is excessive which will not provide any benefits. Depending on the work you do and temperature outside you can regulate your water. Maybe a liter on waking up is good enough. After that 2-3 liters through out the day. Again it depends on the type of work you do. Certain indicators - Urine should be clear and not yellow. You should be heading to washroom every three hours on an average.
