Hi there are many possible causes of sudden swelling behind the head, including: head injury: if your father had an injury to the head, this could cause swelling and should be evaluated by a doctor. Allergic reaction: if your father had an allergic reaction to something, such as a bug bite or medication, this could cause swelling as well. Infection: certain infections, such as cellulitis or an abscess, can cause swelling behind the head. Blood clot: a blood clot in the brain or in the veins that drain blood from the brain can cause swelling and should be evaluated immediately. Tumor: while less common, a brain tumor or other type of tumor in the head or neck can cause swelling.
