At the age of 78, it is very good that your mother is healthy and active. But at this age, there is some sense of insecurity, worthlessness and fear of death. Please try to understand what happened two years back which affected her. May be someone close to her died, or for whatever reasons she was exposed to death. It might have triggered fear of her own death. She is probably not talking to you about it. Try to talk to her casually and find out what is her opinion and idea of death and life after death. She is probably dwelling too much in the past. May be she is carrying some guilt. Also it is important to know if there is any family history of mental illness. Please try to see that she feels safe at home, and feels supported by you. Encourage her to go out and meet people, take her along with you to meet relatives, and for parties/functions whenever possible. See that she spends her time more creatively and keep her away from people with negative attitude. Give her certain jobs that she is able to do, this is will make her feel important. Encourage her to enjoy life in whatever way she wants to. You can take her for" geriatric counselling" along with psychiatric medication. The counsellor will help her to understand life, death and help her to enjoy her life. Take care.

Hi, the symptoms that you have mentioned are of schizophrenia. It's possible that your mother could be suffering from it. You have mentioned that you did take her to a psychiatrist, which on your part is very caring. The medications that she were given, for how long was your mother supposed to take it and how mush did she take? psychotic medicines act in such a way that they reduce the over activity of the brain, which may be difficult to handle by the person as she some where has got used to the over activity of the brain. The reduced activity is the reason why the person feels drowsy and lethargic. It would have been better that instead of stopping the medicine, you could have consulted the same psychiatrist again and discussed your concerns. This way the doctor could have arrived at what dosage /medicine would be more suitable for your mother. Suddenly stopping psychotic medicines have adverse effect on the person. So, do consult a good psychiatrist to evaluate and diagnose what the problem is. Your mother may also require counselling support after couple of weeks of having the medicines to work out what's bothering her at the emotional level and how she can handle the same.

Hi I will prescribe some harmless but effective flower remedy available in homoeopathy shops. Buy this from a shop who sells original medicines. Mix 5 drops of white chestnut + 5 drops of aspen + 5 drops of cherry plum + 5 drops of mimulus. Add these to 100 ml water and drink every 12 hours. Take this for 3 months. If any problems consult me online. These are symptoms of schizophrenia.
