The fear of god is a good thing but not in the traditional sense that we are so mortified by our creator. It is true that we revere god so much that we would be afraid to offend him. We do offend him when we sin or disobey him: actually we break our relationship with him every time we sin. But that is an offense we commit and it is more the consequence than the punishment that we will have to endure. So god is love, and a very loving god at that. He created us with love and wants for us to be in his fold of love? no question about that. He is not just an embodiment of love or a symbol of it or a generator of love: he is love. Since we enjoy his love we must reciprocate it with godly living. In fact, there is a loaded but accurate statement in the bible, (1 john 4: 18? there is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love? perfect love therefore has no fear? god? s love for us is perfect and is called, agape. That being the case, our god is an ever forgiving god, even for the worst crime you may commit. All he requires of the person is repentance and obedience. So tell your friend that, according to the christian faith, she is so precious that god sent his only son, jesus christ, to die for all our sins and brought us all salvation. We just need to respect, cherish and live that love without fear of any punishment, ever. If you love someone, you will not hurt that person; therefore you will not sin, if you love god. Therefore, there are no consequences, and certainly no punishment.

Devotion or bhakti as we call it, is based on love, not fear. Where there is love there is god. Tell your friend not to fear god but to love him. God will never punish only guide. Like the bhagavad gita tells us" lord krishna who is dwelling in everybody's heart, acts as a best wishing friend and purifies the devotee who constantly engages in hearing him" tell your friend that when she says she is scared of god, essentially she is scared of her own self, as god is within every one of us. She need not be afraid of her most trusted friend and guide. Ofcourse if your friend has any questions or wants to talk about this at length she can always talk to someone who is open to this discussion or consult a counsellor and seek help.
