Hi, My son is 4 years old. He is in KG but still reluctant going to school. He has separation anxiety. He still cries in class. He doesn't like to mingle too much with kids and feels nervous in gatherings. He always wants me by his side. Is there something to worry about. Please suggest?

Not to much, because at this time normally there will be separation anxiety for kids. But if it persists too long, then will be a problem. Sit with kid, ask him, if he has any other problem in school or with friends.

Separation anxiety is a developmental disorder of childhood where the child usually has anxiety to new places like school, creche where he needs to be away from people whom he has attachment with eg: parents. Please don't panic as this is a normal phenomenon with most kids initially attending school. Children gradually get adjusted with new environment and these anxiety spells reduce, if the behaviour is persistent then you may need to seek a counselors help for behaviour therapy or a psychiatrist consultation if symptoms are overwhelming. It can be recommended for the parent to sit in the class for few days until the child is able to develop rapport with the teacher and other students in the school.
