Hi lybrate-user. This is one of the most common problem patients face. Wisdom teeth can cause pain due to many reasons. Most commonly, when they are trying to erupt but there is not enough space in the jaw. Sometimes they erupt in unusual positions. As they are the last teeth in the arch, it is very difficult to clean that area, so they are more prone for decay. I would advice you to visit a dentist for an examination and an xray to see the exact position of the tooth and the cause of the pain. The treatment will depend on the cause of the pain. If the tooth is not completely erupted, it might have to be removed with a minor surgical procedure. Don't worry, it is routine procedure carried out in the dental clinics. Take care.Â

Dear lybrate-user, wisdom tooth may erupt at the age of 26+years depending on its location to erupt, space available and nearby tooth condition and nature of jaw etc. The very common symptom is pericoronitis/operculitis. Just make sure the surrounding area is clinically clean fron all food debris. You may use 0.2% cholrhexidine m/wash. In severe case we may prescribe antibiotics. If not erupts properly you may take one opg xray and if needed extract the offending tooth.Â

The wisdom teeth rarely erupt straight. They have gum tissue above them which gets swelled up if some food gets struck and as tooth is far behind brush can't reach there. This can lead to cavity in partially erupted tooth. So without examining it is difficult to pin point the cause. Any pain killer will relieve the pain but the reason of pain needs to be found and treated.Â
