I recently visited a bank and I saw a stray dog sitting on the stairs so when I went up on the stairs where the dog was sitting and I touched the reeling (fence for the stairs) .after that when I came home I accidentally put my hand in my mouth without washing. Now I do not know if reeling had the saliva of dog on it or not and I learnt from internet that rabies can spread through saliva of dog and as I put my hand in my mouth which had touched the reeling which could have spread rabies to me .i do not know if the dog was rabies free or not. When I asked my family doctor he said you need treatment for rabies only when you have been bitten please resolve my query.

Yes saliva of dog can spread rabies but you don't seem to have any significant exposure. Exposure to saliva is when it comes to direct contact with an open wound and yours seems to be a rather indirect source. You wouldn't even qualify for category 1 rabies exposure which is the mildest form. You don't need to panic.

Rabies virus can not stay alive in air or surfaces like railing for long, plus getting rabies from eating smthng touched by dog is another rare event in itself. You need not do anything at all. And for your own peace of mind. If you know that dog then watch it for next 21 days. If he/ she does not die in next 21 days. Thats not a rabid dog. Also rabid dogs are of tend to go away from human populationthemsfve and reamin quietly in some isolated are till they die.
