Hello, When I was a kid nearly 5 years old, I met with an accident as a result of which slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) fall into my eyes. After getting treatment, they were able to clean slaked lime that was clot but still coz of this acid I lost my cornea. I have nearly 10% vision (blurred vision) and my eye size also shrank. Can you please suggest what can be done?

Madam if your eye has had a chemical injury with lime, first the surface needs to be examined, if there is no stem cell deficiency then a corneal transplant alone may help. Else you may need a staged procedure like limbal stem transplant followed by a corneal transplant. However, if your eye size has shrunk, that is it is prethisical, nothing would help and any intervention in a pre phthisical eye always has the risk of the eye going into phthisis, and the prognosis is poor. You need to be examined first by the cornea specialist, for judging prognosis.

Hello Lybrate-User, lime is an alkali and alkali induced chemical injuries can be quiet severe and difficult to manage. From your query it looks like your eye has gone into this and it will be difficult to get useful vision back. But for cometic purpose, you can get a prosthetic eye. It might help in boosting your confidence. Thanks.
