Iron profile and Hb electrophoresis will differentiate.
Hi lybrate-user, You may do Iron profile and Hemoglobin HPLC. If Ferritin or Transferrin saturation is low, it is iron deficiency. If Hb A2 on HPLC is more than 3.5%, it is beta thalassemia trait.
