I have a small gap between my front two teeth. I started the treatment 3 months back by visiting an Oral B Dental Clinic in my hometown. Initially they put braces for 2 months. The effect was visible as the gap closed. Then I got the braces removed and as soon as the braces were removed, the gap again came back. They asked me to put retainers, but I was not at all comfortable with them as I was continuously feeling nauseated and I even committed once. So I didn't put retainers. Then, the dentist just held the gap with an elastic kind of wire for 2-3 days, and yesterday He had put a wire in the back side of upper two teeth, to hold the gap I suppose. It's causing pain and I am quite worried whether it's a general practice or the only solution or is there some alternative.

Retention is the most important part of post orthodontic treatment ,if because of any reason you are not able to wear retainers then the gaps between the teeth are most likely to reappear. If your doctor has put the fixed retainer behind your teeth then it is the only best option to stop the relapse or the coming back of gaps. The pain might be due temporary discomfort which comes because of the wire. You will get used to it very soon but if the pain persists even after week then you should see your dentist and let them know about your problem. Other than this there is no option available to counter relapse.
