Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor, which blocks the peripheral production of estrogen. Hence it leads to response of increased Gonadotropin release hormones (GnRH) from the pituitary, which stimulates the ovulation. Previously ovulation induction was done with clomiphene citrate, which blocks the estrogen receptors, but it stays in body for long time. Letrozole is to be avoided if you are already pregnant as it can cause birth defects in a few cases. If is used for hormonal therapy for breast cancer, for postmenopausal women or after GnRH analogue. Feel free to contact me directly if you want to discuss this further.
