Superficial varicosities can be due to insufficiency of venous valves. Our leg veins carry blood from legs to heart which is against gravity. Normal veins have valves which prevent backflow of blood. If these valves become abnormal the blood star pooling in leg veins due to gravity leading to varicosities. This may lead to leg pain, heaviness, swelling eventually leading to ulcer formation. The type and urgency of treatment is decided by patient symptoms. Few patients do well with leg stockings. Others need endovascular or surgical treatment.
