During pregnancy, your growing baby is cushioned inside a fluid-filled bag within your uterus (womb). This bag is called the amniotic sac and the fluid is called amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid helps: protect your baby from being hurt if you have a blow to your tummy or your tummy is compressed. protect your baby against infection. maintain a constant temperature in your womb. your baby's lungs and digestive system to mature. Babies regularly swallow the amniotic fluid and it is passed out of their bodies as urine. In this way, your baby controls the volume of amniotic fluid around him. It can be worrying to be told you have low amniotic fluid. However, there's not much you can do, apart from drinking plenty of water, eating healthily and getting plenty of rest. Try not to let worry stop you from sleeping and make sure you don't miss any of your doctor's appointments.
