Hello, I am suffering from Stage 3c locally advanced breast cancer. I have been put on neo adjuvant chemotherapy. That is chemotherapy followed by surgery. I have been told that this will help reduce the size of the tumour and lymph nodes thus helping surgical removal. I have talked to the surgeon and he has said that the tumour is in the middle of the breast and since the operation will remove the complete breast from the base -- it matters little whether the size reduces or not. Also he said that he will have no problem in removing the lymph nodes whether enlarged or reduced. This being the case shouldn't the mastectomy be done immediately? Keeping the tumour in vivo increases the chance of metastasis as every day goes by. Waiting for your reply please help me

dear nilima I think neoadjuvant chrmotherapy followed by surgery is a good plan. otherwise also u are supposed to receive the same chemotherapy after surgery. IN fact chemotherapy before surgery is better tolerated and it will assess the impact vivo response of tumor to chemotherapy as well

Neoadjuvant chemo is given in LABC patients before surgery. Yes it is better tolerated by patient before surgery and it will take care of distant metastasis also. According to the recent studies in LABC patients better to give chemo before operation. As removal of the breast and conservation of breast depends on size of the tumor, stage of the disease and your breast size also. We will do same sitting or postmastectomy reconstruction for these kind of patients. You can do the consultation.
