Dear Lybrate user, glimepiride stimulates betacells to secrete insulin. Metformin is supposed to reduce insulin resistance and slow down glucose absorption from the intestine. Usually both these are used together to control increased blood glucose. In newly diagnosed patients metformin alone is used. In some both drugs are used together. Which drug to take for a particular level can be decided by the treating doctor.

Hello, thanks for the query.
Looking at your high glucose levels, it appears there is a need to start on insulin itself. The drugs prescribed are absolutely safe and will help in controlling glucose levels. There is more serious danger with uncontrolled diabetes than any of the drugs. So please continue the treatment. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query.
I have seen the details given. There is no mention of fasting, pp glucose values, hba1c%, present dietary pattern, extent of daily exercise, weight and height, plus bp readings and lipid profile. To give any kind of suggestion or advise I need to know all the above details.
When diabetes is well controlled fasting glucose should be < 100 mg, pp 160 to 170 mg & hba1c% < 6.8. Thanks.
