Epilepsy is an abnormal medical condition due to abnormal electrical discharge from the brain, which could be due to genetic defects, brain injury, brain infection, brain tumor etc. Recent study shows, patients with awareness, knowledge and attitude towards the disease had better health related quality of life. Do?s Do take your medicines at the prescribed times. Do make it known to your family members, friends and people who work with you that you are seizure-prone. Tell them what should be done in case you get an attack in their presence. This is nothing to be ashamed of as epilepsy is a medical condition just like high blood pressure. If your child has epilepsy, do inform the teacher and the school authorities about it. Do tell your child's teacher what to do if your child has a seizure. Do keep an accurate record of your seizures and their frequency. Preferably, maintain a seizure diary. Do ask your doctor about medicines for other conditions before taking them. Do follow a balanced diet. Do exercise regularly but avoid over-exertion. Do have good lighting in the room where you watch TV. TV picture flashes can trigger seizures. Good lighting can prevent such attacks. Do tell someone if you are going for a swim; swim only if your seizures are under control. Moreover, whenever possible, go swimming with a friend. Do talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of using contraceptive pills (medicines used by women to avoid unwanted pregnancy) along with your epilepsy medicines. Do wear protective headgear when cycling. Do tell your doctor about any ill effects that you experience. Do get a good night's sleep daily. Do make sure you have enough medicine so that you don't run short, even when you are travelling. Do check-in with your doctor regularly. Don?ts Don't stop your treatment unless your doctor tells you to. Don't consume caffeine or alcohol excessively. Don't take other medicines without checking with your doctor. Don't lock the bathroom/toilet door, if possible. Don't smoke. Don't give others your medicines and don't take anyone else's medicines. Laparoscopic Urological Surgery - Know The Common Types!

The advent of Laparoscopy has given a new dimension to surgery. Gone are the days when one had to go through painful surgical procedures with many associated complications. Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive involving small incisions. There are negligible complications associated with a quick recovery. In the last few years, there has been a steady rise in people opting for Laparoscopic Urological Surgery. A person may undergo a laparoscopic urological surgery to treat problems of the genitor-urinary tract (which includes the kidneys, ureter, bladder, testes, and penis).

Mentioned below are some of the laparoscopic urological surgeries performed to treat a diseased condition.

  1. Laparoscopic Nephroureterectomy: This surgery is used to treat conditions of renal cancer (Transitional Cell Carcinoma affecting the kidney or the ureter). The surgery involves removal of the ureter (a tubular structure that passes the urine to the bladder from the kidneys). Though considered safe, in some cases, laparoscopic nephroureterectomy may result in blood loss and infection.
  2. Laparoscopic Simple or Radical Nephrectomy: It comes as a blessing for people dealing with different types of kidney problems such as renal cancer, serious injury to the kidney, renal calculus (kidney stones), polycystic kidney disease (the condition is an inherited problem characterized by the formation of cysts within the kidney), symptomatic hydronephrosis and chronic infection. A person may undergo a Laparoscopic Simple Nephrectomy (a laparoscopic surgery which involves removal of one of the kidneys) or a Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy (here, along with the kidney, the surgeon may also remove adjacent lymph nodes and adrenal glands) based on the severity of the kidney problem.
  3. Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty: This surgery is used to treat patients with an obstruction of ureteropelvic junction (UPJ). The ureteropelvic junction is the merger point where the kidney connects to the ureter. UPJ obstruction is often found to be a congenital problem (present from birth). Due to the UPJ obstruction, the urine stored in the kidneys fail to move out of the system. If left untreated, UPJ obstruction can even result in kidney failure. Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty involves clearing the obstruction at the ureteropelvic junction. The surgery, however, comes with certain risk factors. There may be blood loss along with infection at the incision site. In some cases, the surgery may even result in injury to the neighboring organs and tissues (rare).
  4. Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy: In the case of a renal tumor, the diseased part of the kidney is removed by a specialized surgical procedure medically termed as Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy. Here, only the affected area of the kidney is removed sparing the healthy part. Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy is done to prevent further aggravation and kidney failure.
  5. Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy - It is a surgical procedure used in the case of a localized prostate cancer (prostate cancer that has not metastasized beyond the prostate gland). Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy involves removal of the prostate gland along with some neighbouring tissues.

How Homeopathy Can Help If Your Child Is Under Stress?

International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, BHMS
Homeopath, Pune
How Homeopathy Can Help If Your Child Is Under Stress?

Is your child irritable? Not eating well or under performing at school?

Relax! Losing your mind and temper won't help.

There are chances that your child is under stress and needs your support during this testing time. Let's gain better understanding of the problem as a mature step towards positive parenting.

Stress, either intrinsic or extrinsic, can affect your child as easily as it may affect you. There are several causes as to why your child may also be stress-laden even at such a tender age. As pre-schoolers, the major cause for stress stems from anxiety of leaving their parents and spending long hours in an external environment. As a child grows up, further causes of stress may include:

  1. Overwhelming schedule due to large number of academic and extra-curricular activities
  2. High expectations of parents and pressure to perform
  3. Lifestyle or status associated peer-pressure
  4. Conflict between parents / domestic violence / Divorce of parents
  5. Moving to new town or city
  6. Serious illness
  7. Physiological changes during puberty
  8. Worry about getting along with friends

Warning signals that your child is under stress:

  1. Aggression: Children are prone to a high number of aggressive outbursts as they are not as much in control of their emotions as adults are. They may often react with physical aggression (biting, kicking, or hitting) or verbal aggression (screaming or abusing). This can, however, be curbed in a number of ways such as setting firm and consistent limits, and avoiding instilling in them the idea of 'toughness'.
  2. Bed wetting: Though stress and anxiety may not be essential causes that lead to the advent of bedwetting in children, it often accentuates the same. You should reassure your child that you are not angry when he/she has an accident and see the doctor to rule out any other medical causes.
  3. Hyperactive behavior: When children can't handle stress, they release negative energy. Having temper tantrums, running away, or constantly being disobedient are ways to alert adults that there is a problem. Help your child burn off energy in a positive, calming way. Deep breathing exercises, listening to soothing music, stretching, or yoga help.
  4. Withdrawal: Social withdrawal and being frequently moody or irritable can often arise from high levels of stress, social fear and anxiety in children. Offer plenty of positive attention and speak to your child's teacher if you suspect he/she is having trouble with friends at school.
  5. Eating and sleeping disorders: If your child is sleeping less or sleeping more than usual, then it might be an indication that something is not right with your child. Likewise, if there is any change in eating pattern which you find abnormal, then it indicates trouble. This may often stem from stress or anxiety-related issues and hamper the proper growth and nutrient intake in a growing child.

How you can you help your child?

There are several things you can do to help your child work through his/her problems when it comes to combating stress and anxiety. These include:

  1. Have friendly relation with kids so that they feel free to share their problems/ feelings. Kids generally hide things out of fear. Motivate them to express and share their worries.
  2. Try to understand the cause of the stress. Talk about their fears and apprehensions. Make them feel they are understood.
  3. Do not force them to sleep or eat. Encourage to eat well and sleep in time.
  4. The child should be encouraged to indulge in some physical activities like walk/ jog/sports and relaxation exercises like deep breathing/meditation
  5. Avoid burdening them with studies and co-curricula activities. Identify their abilities and interest and respect individual limitations. Don't burden them with your expectations.
  6. There should be sufficient breaks in between studies for rejuvenation. It motivates and enhances productivity.
  7. Avoid demeaning/insulting remarks. Avoid comparisons with other kids.
  8. Avoid negative reactions like scolding/sarcasm/shouting/beating. Teach the child appropriate ways of managing emotions like open communication, sharing state of mind with peers and parents and appropriate anger management techniques.
  9. You should also talk to teachers and peers if you suspect any problem at school and find a solution through their help.
  10. Teach the child about time management. Let them know how to prioritize work according to importance and urgency of task.

Wrinkles - 7 Ways You Can Get Rid of Them

Wrinkles - 7 Ways You Can Get Rid of Them

Wrinkles are a normal yet unsightly sign of aging, which can come about due to various reasons including too much exposure to the sun, poor diet, excessive smoking and drinking, lack of proper sleep, advent of age, loss of moisture and elasticity as well as collagen, which creates a smooth and supple look, and other such reasons. Cosmetic and plastic surgeons are now turning to a variety of methods to lessen the pronounced look of wrinkles and remove them for younger looking skin. Here are a few methods currently in use.

1. Fillers: Fillers like collagen and others including poly lactic acid, Calcium Hydroxlyapatite and Hyaluronic acid can be used to restore the elasticity of the skin even as they provide precious hydration. These injectables can be used on the face as well as the hands for a smooth and supple look.

2. Botox: To get rid of the lines on the forehead and to prevent the onset of more pronounced wrinkles, Botox or Botulinum Toxin Type A is a favoured element used by many cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists. This is usually administered via injection.

3. Retinoids: This is administered with a surgical procedure in order to remove uneven pigmentation as well as the roughness of skin, which sets in with age and excessive smoking and sun exposure. It may cause skin peeling and redness.

4. Laser: The use of laser resurfacing can also help in stimulating collagen production of the skin, which restores some of its elasticity so that wrinkles may be removed and further wrinkles prevented.

5. Surgery: The use of surgical methods like face lifts, brow lifts and other cosmetic processes can help in giving the skin a tighter look which does away with the appearance of wrinkles. These are usually minor procedures from which one will heal fast.

6. Dermabrasion: This method is a surgical one that basically sands the surface of the skin in order to remove the wrinkles. It can cause side effects like permanent discolouration of the skin as well as scarring for particularly sensitive skin.

7. Peels: Glycolic acid peels and deeper peels that use elements like Salicylic acid can be used to go deep into the skin and making it smooth again. It basically makes a difference to the fine lines. There is a chance of side effects like scarring, bruising and general discolouration in this method as well.

Adequate sleep, good nutrition, avoiding excessive sun exposure and a good skin care regimen can help in keeping wrinkles at bay for a long time. Moisturising with products that contain plenty of vitamin A and E can also help in reducing fine lines. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Common Causes Of Erectile Dysfunction

Common Causes Of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a serious matter. It can hit any man, of any age, but of course, is much more prevalent among older men. Once you hit forty, you’re increasingly likely to suffer from ed. It’s important to understand, however, that not every case of sexual dysfunction is an ed problem.

Common causes of erectile dysfunction:

Bad lifestyle:

  • The sad truth is that in a significant number of cases, erectile dysfunction is a condition we bring upon ourselves. Even when these things aren’t the outright cause of ed, they’re almost certain to be contributing factors that make your condition worse.
  • This is a big, expansive category that covers a lot of ground, but in a nutshell, here’s what you need to know.
  • Eating lots of leafy greens, whole grains, oysters, watermelon, and blueberries all fruits will help you give your body all that it needs to improve the quality of your erections, while cutting out processed foods, cigarettes and alcohol will provide further benefits.
  • Add in a healthy dose of exercise at least three times per week, and you’re well on your way to better sexual health!

Your mind:

  • Many of the causes of erectile dysfunction are actually psychological. Understand that this is not the same as saying that it’s all in your head, because it’s not.
  • Psychological issues can easily lead to a variety of very real physical ailments. If that surprises you, it shouldn’t.
  • Stress can lead to heart disease, so also other psychological issues can lead to ed. It’s a pretty common, fairly well understood phenomenon.
  • Stress is, in fact, one of the leading causes of ed, which makes it a particularly nasty condition. It also can lead to heart troubles, so it hits you twice.
  • Long before stress kills you though, it will impact your sex life in a major, and entirely negative way.
  • Our modern society is filled to the point of overflowing with stress triggers. We work too many hours. We don’t take enough vacations, and even when we do, we tend to bring our work with us, thanks to the advent of the smart phone, which is both a blessing and a curse.
  • Yes, it lets us keep in touch with friends and families no matter where we are in the world, but it also means that we have the tendency to never unplug. We need that. We need time to decompress and relax. Sure, you can run at top speed for a while, but if you do it too long, you’ll burn yourself out.
  • If you keep going much beyond that, your problems will only worsen with time. Why would you want to do that to yourself? it simply makes no sense.

Depression:

  • Depression is another common cause of ed, and let’s face it. When you’re depressed, sex is about the last thing you’re thinking of.
  • Stress is a particularly nasty cause of ed, because most of the antidepressant medicines available only make ed worse.
  • Depression is insidious on another front as well, because it’s easy to get caught in a negative, self-reinforcing feedback loop trap.
  • What we mean by that is that when you’re depressed, your self-esteem is low. If you try to have sex, your low self-esteem may lead to performance issues. Then, when you fail to perform, sexually, it lowers your self-esteem further, which makes future sexual performance issues even more likely.
  • Once you’re caught in that trap, it can be notoriously difficult to get out of it.
  • One thing you’ll note that isn’t on the list is" performance anxiety" that’s because while performance anxiety can lead to a lack of sexual performance in certain specific situations, these are generally isolated, one-off events.
  • The risk, however, is that a failure to perform sexually can sometimes lead to depression, which can cause ed.

While some of the gynecological conditions are minor and can be easily treated and taken care of, others may give you a hard time. From PCOS to Endometriosis, left untreated, some of these problems may trigger infertility, complicating things further.

Open surgeries have long been the only surgical option to deal with such critical problems. However, the advent of Laparoscopy has brought about a much-needed relief benefitting millions of women with gynecological problems worldwide. Based on latest technology and being minimally invasive, laparoscopy comes with a lot of benefits. In addition to surgically treating a condition, laparoscopy also ensures an accurate and better diagnosis. In this article, we will discuss the laparoscopic surgeries to deal with infertility and other related gynecological issues.

Infertility and Laparoscopic surgery

Identifying the underlying factor(s) responsible for infertility can go a long way to treat the condition successfully. Some of the factors that contribute towards infertility include

  1. PCOS: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a medical condition whereby formation of a cyst(s) take place in one or both the ovaries. These cysts affect the ovulation process as the eggs either do not mature or the ovary fails to release the mature eggs. To deal with this situation, a surgeon often performs the Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling or Ovarian Diathermy.
    • Here, the surgeon makes small cuts in the abdomen (belly button).
    • To inflate the stomach, the surgeon inserts carbon dioxide gas inside the stomach.
    • The Laparoscope along with the surgical instruments are next inserted inside through the incisions.
    • Parts of the ovary that are being affected are destroyed using Electrocautery.
  2. Ovarian Diathermy plays a significant role in normalizing the ovulation process, which was affected by PCOS.
  3. A blocked fallopian tube can also trigger infertility. In this case, Laparoscopic Fimbrioplasty (performed when there is a scar or a blockage in the part of the fallopian tube that is adjacent to the ovary) comes in handy. It is a laparoscopic reconstructive procedure that helps to open the tubal blockage, thereby restoring the fimbriae (finger-like projections located at the tube ends that aids in the transportation of the matured eggs from the ovary into the uterus).
  4. Endometriosis: This is a medical term used to define a condition whereby the endometrial cells grow outside the uterus, often in the ovary or the fallopian tube resulting in pain and infertility. Here also, laparoscopy comes as a savior, getting rid of any scarred tissues, endometrial implants or endometrioma (endometriosis cyst that forms in the ovary), thereby improving the condition.
  5. Laparoscopy can also be used to treat ovarian cancer, removal of fibroids (uterine myomas or uterine tumors), hysterectomy (uterus removal).
  6. Laparoscopy plays a significant role in reversing the tubal ligation (closure of the fallopian tube to prevent pregnancy).
