Night blindness is due to a disorder of the cells in the retina that are responsible for vision in dim light. It has many causes, including: • Short-sightedness • Glaucoma medications that work by constricting the pupil • Cataracts • Retinitis pigmentosa • Vitamin A deficiency How is night blindness treated? Treatment for night blindness will depend upon its cause. Treatment may be as simple as a new prescription for your glasses or switching glaucoma medications, or it may require surgery in cases of cataracts Dietary Management For Night Blindness Vitamins A, C and E are potent antioxidants which slow down age related macular degeneration and help maintain healthy tissues and cells in the eyes. Vitamins C and E may also inhibit the development or progression of cataracts. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two antioxidants called carotenoids, which help in neutralizing free radicals and maintaining eye health. Sources of Vitamin A: Yellow-orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, mango, papaya, pumpkin, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, eggs, milk and milk products. Vitamin A can be stored in your body, so you can opt for your favorite seasonal foods! Sources of Vitamin C: Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruit, peppers, tomatoes, kiwis, gooseberries, strawberries and Brussels sprouts. Sources of Vitamin E: Nuts like almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, fortified oils, seeds, eggs, milk and dairy. Sources of Lutein: Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and chard, yellow peppers, mango and bilberries. Sources of Zeaxanthin: Oranges, tangerines, eggs, spinach, dark green lettuce, corn, broccoli and orange sweet peppers. For maximizing the benefits of the above vegetables, it is best to have then lightly cooked rather than raw. Cooking or steaming breaks down the cells, making it simpler for the body to absorb these nutrients from the foods. Aim to eat at least 2 to 4 servings or more of these foods every day to ensure that you are getting enough of these 5 powerful nutrients.

I am 26 years old now. I am suffering from a eye problem from the past 10 years. Whenever I give little bit of pressure in my eye like watching tv or mobile for 3 or 4 hrs irritation occurs. Even I can't sit in the window sit in bus or car. Heavy winds pressure causes eye irritation. During irritation some very small scar like thing occurs in my eye Cornea. Due To the movement of cornea this scars causes deep irritation. Sometimes I can't even open my eye. It persists for 1 or 2 or 3 hrs then suddenly goes away within second. Cornea scars also disappears. I often suffer due to this 2 or 3 times in a week. Causing lot of problem in my day to day life. What can be the reason and solution of this problem?

Hello lybrate-user, With the information provided by you the most common conditon that I can think you are suffering from is Dry Eyes Syndrome (also know as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca or Sjogren Sydrome) or may be some variant of dry eyes syndrome. It is a condition in which there is deficiency of tears in the eyes leading to dryness causing uneasiness and all the symptoms which you have mentioned. The salivary glands may also be affected in this disease and lots of patients also complain of dryness of the mouth. The temporary corneal scars which you are mentioning, those may be stringy discharge that causes discomfort. To diagnose the condition you will require clinical evaluation of the eye followed by these tests- Tear Break Up test, Schirmer Test and Epithelial Staining. There may be possibilities of other diseases also (Differential Diagnosis) like Eye lid infections, Allergic Conjunctivitis or Side effect of some drugs (Medication), Which can cause these symptoms. The treatment of Dry Eyes depends on the severity Medications includes Tear Subtitutes (Lubricants) Topical Corticosteroids. Topical Cyclosporin Surgery includes Punctal Occlusion. My suggestion is to evaluate your eyes with a Eye Doctor to diagnose the condition, and if it is Dry eyes then stage the disease and start the treatment accordingly.

I am a 24 year old guy my eyes feel burn while watching t. V. N computer. What to do?

I am a 24 year old guy my eyes feel burn while watching t. V. N computer. What to do?
Some people who have a minimal refractive error will often get away without wearing glasses, but when working on a computer screen or doing a lot of concentrated work, the small prescription can begin to cause symptoms and under these circumstances correcting the prescription with glasses can be helpful. An anti-reflection coating (ultraclear) is often advised to reduce the annoying reflections of light from the lens surfaces. If your eyes are fine and normal then there is no proven glasses that can be prescribed to help. However, some people find that wearing glasses with a tint that absorbs the blue spectrum of light makes vision more comfortable. They are usually tinted a yellow colour. A common problem when working on a screen for long periods is'dry eye. This is because concentrated work tends to reduce the blink reflex that replenishes the tears, and the dry atmosphere and lack of fresh air adds to the problem of insufficent tears. Allowing the cornea to become dry can cause irritation and blurred and variable vision. Use some lubricating eye drops like refresh tears, use them at least 4 times a day at least. You do need to look at every aspect of your work environment also. Use proper lighting, dont work in dim conditions should use table and chair. Your table should be of proper height so that you dont have to bend too much. Take rest after 30 mins for few mins, put the tear drops and work again. Do blink intermittently.

Simple reasons could be infection or allergy (conjunctivitis), or there could be more complicated reasons. Difficult to tell only by query. It is better to consult an ophthalmologist in clinic or upload some photos for an online consultation.

Hello there are many causes for redness of eyes mainly allergy, infection, inflammation and dry eyes etc. 1. Redness + itching: allergy 2. Redness + pain + watering + decreased vision: infection 3. Redness + pain: inflammation 4. Redness foreign body sensation: dryness if there is only redness then it is normal as slight exposure to dust, temperature or air or eyes may be red in morning. Stress may also cause redness. I usually do not treat when there is only redness, you can 1. Blink a lot 2. Wash eyes with fresh water 3. Cold compresses 4. Use lubricating eye drop like flogel these measures will help to keep your eyes healthy but it will not have any effect on redness (treating general redness alone is not necessary also) having said that you should consult local ophthalmologist for proper examination and treatment.

You should consult retina specialist ,if there is lattice degeneration with hole ,then you will have to go for laser barrage,& if there is lattice degeneration with no hole, you will have to be under observation because in future you may face lattice degeneration with hole, which may lead to retinal detachment ,so you may go for prophylactic laser barrage.

I have a red eye problem. Little red spot is covered on my face. What should I do now. Please help.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology

I have a red eye problem. Little red spot is covered on my face. What should I do now. Please help.
Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care.

My eyesight has been stable for the past 15 years. Although now I feel that my eyes are always stressed. Even washing with water gives temporary relief. Even when I get up in the morning, my eyes feel heavy, irritated and stressed. Closing eyes bring relief, and I feel like I should keep my eyes closed all the time. I don't watch tv or use laptop for extended periods. Mobile use however is extensive. I'm not on any medication currently and have no history of any disease. Please suggest the proper course of action.

The number is not much. This will not cause pain. For computers just follow following instructions: Take frequent breaks while you are working Every 20-25 mins take break to look away from screen Blink more frequently' Level of screen should be below the level of eyes Ac should not blow directly on your face Here are the instructions for mobile phone use: 1. Blink, blink and blink again. Blinking often (and for more than a second) keeps your eyes moist and reduces dryness and irritation. We tend blink about a third less than we normally would when we stare at our smartphone screens, which starves our poor peepers of protective tears. Keep your eyes wet by blinking about 10 times every 20 minutes or so and you should be good to go. 2. Minimize glare. Unless you have a smartphone equipped with anti-glare Corning Gorilla Glass or use a matte screen protector film, you’re probably coping with a fair amount of annoying reflective glare. 3. Take breaks. Follow 20-20-20 rule. The concept is to take a break from looking at your screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds while looking at something 20 feet away. Doing so relaxes your eye muscles 4. Adjust your brightness. Having your screen too bright or too dark stresses your eyes out and can cause problems maintaining focus. To eliminate either issue in about a matter of seconds, simply go into your smartphone settings and adjust your screen brightness so it’s about the same as the light level in the environment around you 5. Tweak your text size and contrast. Adjusting your smartphone text contrast and size also provides a little much-needed relief. 6. Keep a clean screen. Routinely wipe down your smartphone screen with a dry (not wet!) cleaning cloth to remove distracting dust, grime, smudges and fingerprints. 7. Hold your smartphone farther away. Try holding yours at least 16 to 18 inches away from your eyes to give your eyes a break.

Only practical thing that you can do is wear your glasses regularly and get your eyes tested once in a year. Needless to say that avoid junk food and eat healthy. Spectacle power usually does not go by natural means.

red eye has many causes. You have to see if it is associated with blurring of vision, pain, discharge and other complaints. But commonly its allergic or infective in origin ie allergic or infective conjunctivitis. Which has simple treatment protocol. But still its wise to see an ophthalmologist for a thorough slit lamp examination to rule out other differentials for red eye.
