My brother, 45 years old is facing the problem of kidney stone for last so many years. It seems that a factory of making stone is inside his kidneys. Although, every time, stone comes out itself if patient takes plenty of water continuously 12-24 hours and maintains a water pressure over there. Some time, pain is to be faced & few times, no pain is there. Ultrasound reports tell lie some times and no stone is visible in the system but stone comes out. What to do?

General precautions for stones: 1. Drink lot of fluids (keep urine clolorless & urine volume per 24 hr > 1.5 to 2 liters) 2. Reduce salt intake 3. Reduce intake of animal proteins These three things are universal for any kidney stone. If you are taking calcium supplements for bone health, try taking calcium citrate preparation since citrate prevent stone formation. Take calcium supplements along with meals and not in empty stomach. Milk and milk containing products must also be taken along with meals to prevent excessive calcium absorption which can promote stones. However, regular milk/calcium supplement is required. Other things you should follow are: - Increase fruit intake (except grapes) - Decrease coffee, tea, soft drinks, nuts and chocolate

No food, fruit or vegetable will reduce or palliate symptoms. Kindly get to a Urologist and get his symptom score assessed to know whether he needs surgery or not. Also get a PSA done to rule out cancer of the prostate.

Few tips on diet - have a low protein diet (decrease in milk and its products and also decrease in the intake of pulses and nuts etc) - can use corn oil, sunflower oil, olive oil for cooking -decrease the intake of butter, ghee, cream, coconut etc - avoid farsan food items - whole grain cereals are best for carbohydrate intake - get your blood checked for electrolyte levels regularly and adjust salt in diet as per the report values.
