Chin Augmentation (Mentoplasty) treatment is a plastic surgery done on the chin. Mentoplasty is also known as genioplasty. Mentoplasty is done for the reshaping of the chin and correcting the malformations of the chin. It is also done as a part of the craniofacial reconstruction and orthodontic surgery. Chin implants done by a cosmetologist for reshaping the chin is not covered by insurance. However, chin surgery done for reconstructive procedures can be claimed from insurance companies. Mentoplasty is not a frequently performed plastic surgery procedure and it is usually done in combination with rhinoplasties. This procedure is done in adults and not usually preferred to be done in children. Mentoplasties are of two types. One is augmenting a small chin and the other is the reduction of protruding chin. Chin augmentation is done more frequently than the reduction of the chin. Patients should stop smoking two weeks prior to the procedure and stop medications which contain aspirin and also NASIDs 2 weeks before undergoing the treatment. The patients are advised to be on an empty stomach for the procedure (not to eat or drink eight hours prior to the surgery). The patients are asked to take liquid diet for 4 days after the procedure. They are asked to avoid sleeping on the face and are asked to rinse their mouths with hydrogen peroxide and water solution. A few antibiotics are prescribed to reduce chances of infections. After few days the change for the better can be felt.
