Reasons Why You Should Vaccinate Against HPV

Reasons Why You Should Vaccinate Against HPV

HPV refers to Human Papillomavirus. This is a common virus, which has got more than 100 different types and over 40 of these types are transmitted sexually. This virus may cause cervical cancer and cases of genital warts. It is likely to occur in people who are sexually active to contract genital HPV, and it is not accompanied by any signs or symptoms. The virus is transmitted via skin to skin contact and is severely infectious in nature. Using condoms may reduce the risk of spreading of this virus, but is not always successful.

There are two major vaccines for HPV.

  1. GardasilThis vaccine prevents the most common HPVs which are associated with genital and anal cancer, and also warts of both genital and anal type.
  2. CervarixThis type of vaccine prevents HPV associated with the occurrence of cervical cancer.

Reasons for vaccination against HPV

HPV vaccines are recommended to girls between 11 and 12 years. It is also given to girls and women between the age of 13 and 26 years, who have never been vaccinated against HPC before. These vaccines should be given to females before they start being active sexually and get exposed to the HPV virus. Sexually active females benefit from these vaccines as well, but the effect is less.

Here are three reasons why you should vaccinate against HPV:

  1. All types of HPV vaccine help in the elimination of the viruses which cause cervical cancer. Viruses causing cancer in the vulva, vagina or anus are also targeted by these HPV vaccines. The HPV vaccines also protect against genital or anal warts. HPV vaccines work effectively in the prevention of cancers caused by HPC viruses and also curb the common health problems which are accompanied.
  2. The effect of HPV vaccines is quite long lasting in an individual who is vaccinated against HPV. Usually it lasts for ten years or more without having any related disorders or cancers. The protection does not weaken over time and remains stable.
  3. HPV vaccines are licensed by the FDA to be completely safe and efficient to use. Extensive studies have been carried out globally, and no safety concerns have ever arisen. The side effects of HPV vaccines are usually quite mild. However, a little amount of pain, dizziness and nausea are involved.

HPV vaccines are a series of effective vaccines, which prevent the occurrence of cervical cancer and other cancers which are sexually transmitted. They are generally given to women before getting sexually active to prevent transmission of HPV viruses. Some HPV vaccines are prescribed to males as well.

How Can Glycolic Peels Help Restore Your Skin?

How Can Glycolic Peels Help Restore Your Skin?

There is no denying the fact that everyone wants to enjoy a healthy and younger looking skin sans the wrinkles and blemishes. Unfortunately, skin aging is a natural process that will catch up sooner or later. But that does not mean you should not take care of the skin. In fact, a proper skin care can go a long way to slow down the skin aging. In this context, it is important to mention about the chemical peels. Packed with chemicals, the chemical peels when applied will exfoliate the skin, leaving it fresh, rejuvenated and younger looking.

A chemical peel often used as part of a skin care routine is the Glycolic Acid Peel. As the name indicates, the main chemical used in the peel is glycolic acid. Derived from sugar beets, sugar cane, or pineapple and a part of the Alpha Hydroxy family, glycolic acid are known to be extremely beneficial for the skin. Glycolic acid leaves your skin deeply exfoliated. The signs of skin aging, as well as skin pigmentation, can be taken care of by the glycolic acid. In fact, dermatological conditions such as Psoriasis, Seborrheic keratosis, to name a few, can also be successfully treated using glycolic acid.

Steps to apply the glycolic peel?

  1. Before the application of the glycolic peel, it is important that a person cleanses his/her face thoroughly.
  2. Apply a thin layer of the peel evenly all over the face and the neck (avoid the area under the eyes). The glycolic peel comes with a neutralizer (used to neutralize or terminate the action of the acid).
  3. After the stipulated time (as mentioned in the guidelines), apply the neutralizer solution using a cotton ball at the areas where the peel was applied.
  4. Wash your face thoroughly with water to get rid of any traces of the acid and the neutralizer.
  5. Pat dry the face with a soft towel followed by the use of a good moisturizer.

Advantages of the Glycolic peel

  1. The glycolic peel enhances the production of collagen, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles to a great extent.
  2. As stated earlier, the glycolic peels act as a great exfoliator getting rid of the dead skin. As a result, the skin appears smooth and radiant.
  3. The glycolic peels can be a great relief for people with acne problems (provided your doctor recommends the same).

Precautions
The glycolic peel may come with many advantages. However, one should be careful before using the peel.

  1. Read the instructions thoroughly before you use the glycolic peel.
  2. The peel may cause skin irritation, flaking or even redness. It is best to go for a patch test before applying the glycolic peel.
  3. The glycolic peel can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Thus, always use a sunscreen after using the glycolic peel.

Epilepsy - Signs and Symptoms You Must Know!

Epilepsy - Signs and Symptoms You Must Know!

Epilepsy is a disorder in the central nervous system characterized by recurrent seizures. An unexpected rush of electrical activity inside the brain leads to a seizure. Brain activity becomes abnormal and leads to periods of unusual behaviour with loss of awareness at times.

Seizures do not always include unusual muscle movements or convulsions. Untreated seizures can seriously affect the lives of children having them. Epilepsy affects both men and women regardless of their ethnic background and age.

Signs of Epilepsy:

  • A staring spell
  • Momentary bewilderment
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Jerking movements of arms and legs.
  • Panic or anxiety

Kinds of Seizures:
Seizures are normally classified as focal or generalized depending on the commencement of abnormal brain activity.

  1. Focal (partial) seizures result from abnormal activity in a particular area of the person's brain. Simple partial seizures may change emotions or the way things smell, appear, feel, sound or taste. It is characterized by tingling and dizziness.
  2. Complex partial seizures or focal seizures with impaired awareness entail a modification of or loss of awareness and consciousness. Repetitive movements are performed during such seizures such as hand rubbing, walking in circles or swallowing.

Thorough testing is needed to differentiate epilepsy from other neurological disorders such as narcolepsy, migraine or mental illness.

Generalized seizures normally affect all areas of the brain and consist of:

  • Tonic seizures lead to muscle stiffness and normally affects muscles in the person's back, legs and arms.
  • Atonic seizures or drop seizures lead to a loss of muscle control which makes a person abruptly collapse or fall down.
  • Myoclonic seizures are visible as short jerks or twitches of a person's arms and legs.
  • Clonic seizures are characterized by repetitive or rhythmic jerking muscle movements.
  • Tonic-clonic seizures cause sudden loss of consciousness, quivering and body stiffening.
  • Absence seizures might take place in clusters and lead to momentary loss of awareness.

Symptoms of Epilepsy:
The main symptoms of epilepsy are seizures and it differs from one person to another.

Symptoms of Focal (partial) seizures include:

  • Dizziness
  • Change or modification in the sense of smell, taste, hearing, sight or touch.
  • Twitching and tingling of limbs.

Symptoms of Complex partial seizures include:

  • Unresponsiveness
  • Staring blankly
  • Performing repetitive movements
  • Loss of awareness or consciousness

Genetics may provide a person with a natural seizure threshold as a person who is susceptible to seizure triggers is said to have inherited a low seizure threshold. A higher threshold conversely makes a person less liable to have seizures.

Epilepsy is a comparatively common neurological disorder that affects innumerable people worldwide and treatments range from medication to surgery.
