Dear lybrate user... Social Anxiety Disorder manifests itself in form of restlessness and tremolousness of body with pounding of heart in social situations. The person is so uncomfortable that he literally avoids social gatherings or meeting other people. In social situations this disorder causes a marked functional impairment to the person. Depending upon the degree of impairment you may be benefited by bringing lifestyle changes with adequate stress management in life. If significant impairment is there you may require medications along with stress management and lifestyle changes like healthy food habits, regular 30 mins exercise and fixed sleep wake schedule. If we see neurobiologically, in anxiety the highest centerrs of our brain responsible fot thinking and cognition are over-rided by the lower centers responsible for emotions. This leads to functional impairment and fear. What I would suggest is to get involved in thinking during such anxiety provoking social situations so as to activate the higher centers to get a better hold of the moment. So you can do say counting of numbers or start talking with close ones or friends there about some thoughtful thing like what you found in newspaper today or before or work related talks. I hope these will help you to hold yourself upright in social situations. But thats not enough as generally a little help of medications is required at the start. Take care
