Hi, My grandmother 89 years old having acid fast bacilli positive in pleural effusion and ADA level 125 but in chest x-ray there is no any sign of tuberculosis so I want to ask if pleural effusion TB is contagious or not? What care should we taken?

Yes it is contagious... Give her proper medicines.. And maintain hygiene... keep children away from her.

Hi. Tubercular pleural effusion is non contagious but can be contagious if there is involvement of lung parenchyma with sputum for AFB also positive. Need not to worry. Continue anti tubercular therapy with optimum dosage according to body weight under regular follow up with physician. Thanks.
