Dear Lybrate user, Tetracycline stains are one of the most difficult type of stains on teeth to be removed. They are present deep in the teeth and are irreversible stains. A toothpaste which is meant for plaque removal and prevent cavities will not be able to whiten tetracycline affected teeth. Please visit your dentist and ask for treatment options suited for your condition. Latest Tooth bleaching procedures or veneers will be helpful.

There are two different types of staining of teeth 1. Extrinsic staining- caused by short term pan chewing, cigarette smoking, tea and coffee consumption 2. Intrinsic Staining- caused by long term pan chewing, cigarette smoking, fluorosis staining, and drug induced staining (tetracycline staining) In the case of extrinsic staining, Scaling, polishing does help to a great extent apart from home medicated toothpastes (like you mentioned Snowdent Toothpaste) Whereas for intrinsic staining, it is not sufficient to stick to the same method as used for extrinsic staining. The following treatments are suggested depending on the severity and expectation of result 1. Bleaching- This method will to an extent lighten the teeth as well as lighten the stains to be less dominantly visible on the teeth. PRO. Preserves your natural tooth structure. CON- not very effectively esthetic. Also some people may complain of sensitivity. Another factor is that the bleaching effect is not permanent 2. Capping individual teeth for esthetic purpose- This method involves shaving a part of your tooth so that Individual Crowns can be placed to negate the stains that were previously visibly present on the teeth effectively giving you a more confident smile. PRO-You can chose the color of teeth that you would want (be sure not to choose one that is not drastically different from the original). Long lasting (to permanent) results. Minor defects in the teeth alignment may also be corrected. CON-Quite a considerable amount of the tooth structure is lost. 3. Veneering- This is a relatively new approach wherein the result of capping the teeth are acheived by minimal to no shaving of the original tooth structure. PRO-Not much of the natural tooth structure is lost. You can chose the color of teeth that you would want (be sure not to choose one that is not drastically different from the original). Long lasting (to permanent) results. Minor defects in the teeth alignment may also be corrected. CON- A bit expensive than the other options.
