Veneers: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Veneers are an aesthetic solution to your crooked teeth problems. They are fixed over the problematic teeth and give a false impression of straight teeth. If you have crooked teeth and do not want to invest your time in correcting them through braces, veneers are a great option. Veneers also work if the issue with your smile is primarily aesthetic. A veneer is a very thin shell or layer of tooth coloured porcelain or composite. It is placed over the outer portions of your teeth to create an illusion of perfect, shiny teeth. It is generally done when a tooth has been damaged by decay or accident or has become discoloured due to some reason. Veneers are not a permanent solution to your damaged teeth; they will just cover the imperfections.

How is the treatment done?

Your dentist will start with start with checking if you have any fillings in your teeth. A mould of your teeth will be made using putty like material. This will help the doctor in making the veneer according to the exact size of your teeth. While fixing the veneer, a very small amount of natural tooth material will be removed to ensure that the veneer does not look or feel bulky. It will then be held in place with a special strong bond. Veneers may sometimes break or get damaged if the tooth is knocked. In some cases, they may be glued back while sometimes, they may have to be replaced. The material used for white fillings may also be used to build veneers directly upon the tooth. A mild acid will be used to roughen the tooth’s surface and then, the white material will be applied in thin layers until the teeth regain their appearance.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

If you have severely dull or discoloured teeth, veneers are a good option for you. They will enhance the appearance of your mouth, smile and other facial features.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If your natural teeth are functionally and aesthetically adequate, your doctor will not suggest you to go for veneers.

Are there any side effects?

You may have a tugging sensation for a few days. It may take a little while in getting used to the veneers. Other than this, they do not have any side effects.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You should make sure that no external pressure is put on the veneer. Take care of the rest of your teeth. Maintain good oral hygiene, brush and floss your teeth daily.

How long does it take to recover?

Your treatment will be done in two sessions. In the first session, your dentist will take a mould of your teeth so that your veneers are made according to the size of your existing teeth. The second session will take place after two to four weeks after your veneers are ready. You may need just 2-3 days to resume your daily activities after getting them fixed.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

One session of consultation with your dentist may cost between ₹500 - ₹1200. The cost of a veneer is around ₹13000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Fitting of veneers may last only a few years. They may even break if your tooth is knocked.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

You can go for braces to correct your crooked teeth. Getting crowns fixed is another aesthetic solution to your tooth troubles.

Most people believe that veneers are a single treatment when there are actually many types of veneer you can avail.

Some common types of veneers include—

  1. Composite Veneers: Composite veneers are more commonly done. These are adjusted and sculpted during the dentist appointment. Cracked or chipped tooth, small cosmetic problems are usually fixed with composite veneers.

Types of Dental Problems That Veneers Fix-

Veneers are routinely used to fix:

  1. Teeth that are discolored -- either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth
  2. Teeth that are worn down
  3. Teeth that are chipped or broken
  4. Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
  5. Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)

Advantages-

The advantages of veneers are as follows:

  1. They give a natural appearance to your teeth.

  2. The tissues of the gum can tolerate porcelain well.

  3. Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains.

  4. The porcelain colour can be chosen to make dark teeth appear whiter.

  5. Veneers offer a traditional approach in transforming the shape and colour of a tooth; they don’t normally require the intensive shaping before the procedure, like dental crowns do.

  6. Veneers offer an aesthetic dental substitute.

Dentist,
You do have to modify your eating habits a little. Veneers are not like battery which can be replaced as soon as it's so working. Better idea is to put crowns and that too preferably on front 6 teeth for best results and no compromise on your eating habits.

Hello, the gap between teeth can be closed by: 1. Orthodontic (braces) treatment which is the best and most conservative treatment. This is the right age to get it done. Visit an orthodontist and get it checked. 2. Veneers 3. Crowns.

Beautiful Sparkling Smile
Hi friends!

This is Dr. Premendra Goyal. I m a dentist from Mumbai.

We Look forward to beautiful smiles and any difference in color or any darkness in color of your teeth, they bother you. We all look forward to have a white sparkling smile. Now today, to have this smile is pretty easy. We are worried about yellow teeth. Why do our teeth turn yellow? That is the biggest thing to understand first. The color of your teeth may change because of staining of your teeth, which may happen because of sudden food habits, tobacco use, excess of tea, coffees, colas. These stains can be easily removed by a simple cleaning up procedure of your teeth, wherein your dentist clean up the surface of your teeth and polish them giving you a sparkling smile. Many at times, you have situation wherein your teeth are yellow from inside. Now today, they re not difficult to clean, you ve whitening procedures. You can just get your teeth bleached professionally, which is a combination of a office bleach, wherein your dentist bleaches in the chair and maybe follow it up with some home bleaching program. Properly done, these treatments can give you good lasting results for years together. You may end up having good white teeth for five to six years at a stretch. In some cases you may have difficult stains which happen because of fluoride. These are termed as fluorosis. In very rare cases, you may need to hide those stains, which again is very simple using dental veneers or some bonding procedures, wherein some tooth colored material is placed on top of your tooth to hide those stains. So, please don t get depressed having dark teeth, you still can have a white sparkling smile anytime you want.
