Medically called dyspnea, shortness of breath is the sensation of not having enough air in one's lungs. Healthy individuals may experience this sensation during heavy exercise, adverse environmental conditions such as heat or altitude, or due to pre-existing habits such as smoking. Chronic shortness of breathe is symptomatic of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease amongst other heart and lung-related illnesses. Acute shortness of breath can indicate asthma attacks, carbon monoxide poisoning, cardiac tamponade. as well as many other pulmonary or cardiac illnesses.
