Rhinoplasty: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Jun 24, 2023

What is the Rhinoplasty treatment?

Rhinoplasty is a procedure wherein the shape of nose is corrected and reconstructed by the use of plastic surgery. People get it done to change the appearance of their nose or improve their breathing conditions. Rhinoplasty can change the bone, cartilage or the skin of the nose, as need be. It is a procedure with no fixed set of rules. The outcome and treatment may vary from person to person. It can be done to correct injuries, birth marks/defects and also treat several breathing problems.

How is Rhinoplasty treatment done?

In most cases, the surgeon will readjust the bone and cartilage underneath your skin as per your personal requirements. It is done through a small incision at the base of your nose between the nostrils. The treatment proceeds according to the shape you want your nose to be. For small requirements, cartilage present deep inside your nose or ear can be used. In case of bigger requirements, the surgeon can use cartilage or bone from rib or other parts of the body. Rhinoplasty is done using local anaesthesia. This means that a pain numbing medication is injected in the area where the surgery is to take place.

Who is eligible for the Rhinoplasty treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

People who are dissatisfied with the way their nose is shaped often go for rhinoplasty. It is also for the ones who want to get rid of birth marks or accident scars or injuries marks. Rhinoplasty is also a blessing for the people who are born with too narrow or too wide nostrils resulting in breathing issues.

Who is not eligible for the Rhinoplasty treatment?

Children should not go through this surgery. It is only after 15-16 years of age does one become capable enough to go through this tough process physically as well as mentally.

Are there any side effects of Rhinoplasty treatment?

You may experience bleeding and swelling in your nose. It may be congested due to splints that are placed inside during the surgery. Drainage of mucus and old blood for a few days is very common after a nose job. There is nothing to be stressed about if you strictly follow the doctor’s instructions and do not do anything on your own.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Immediately after the surgery you should lie with your head slightly raised higher than your chest. The internal dressing should not be fiddled with for a week. You should not do physical strenuous activities like running or gym until your doctor allows you to. Do not blow your nose. Eat high fibre food items so that it heals faster. You are also advised not to wear sunglasses or eye glasses for 4 weeks after the surgery. Avoid going out in the sun for a few weeks. If unavoidable, wear a generous coat of sunscreen on your nose.

How long does it take to recover after Rhinoplasty treatment?

You may have to follow the precautionary instructions for a few months. However, you may resume your routine duties in one to two weeks.

What is the price of the Rhinoplasty treatment in India?

The total cost of getting a nose surgery done in India may come out to be between ₹40,000- ₹1,50,000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

If rhinoplasty is done carefully and properly, it can last a lifetime. Hence, it is always recommended to consult a good surgeon with quite a few years of experience. The most amount of healing takes place in the initial 3-4 years of a nose job after which the result remains pretty much the same for the rest of the lifetime.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Minor corrections in your nose can be done by using injectable fillers like Radiesse and Hyaluronic Acid fillers. Some corrections can be made by just by a clever makeup trick of contouring your nose. Think well before going through this tedious process of nose job.
