What is the remedy about?

Common Cold is a viral infection that infects the upper respiratory tract. It is a contagious disease caused by different types of viruses.

  • Garlic is a great remedy for cold. Garlic has a rich content of Allicin, which has antimicrobial properties. Hence, adding garlic to your diet will be greatly beneficial if you are suffering from cold. Another vegetable that can help you fight cold is ginger. Ginger has been used for medicinal purpose for a long time. A few slices of ginger boiled along with water helps to soothe a sore throat or a cough.
  • Honey is another remedy that can be used during cold. A hot cup of tea mixed with honey helps from a sore throat. Honey has lots of antioxidants which are also helpful for the body. Eat as many citric fruits as you can. Increase the intake of lemon, orange and other such food. It’ll increase the level of vitamin C. It’ll also help reduce phlegm when you are suffering from cold.
  • If nothing else, take a lot of salt water. Salt water is greatly beneficial to the body when one is suffering from cold. It prevents upper respiratory infections. Keep your body warm, especially your chest. Mixing mint with drinking water will also help you during cold.

Are there any side effects?

Too much garlic intake can cause diarrhea and unpleasant mouth odor. If you are suffering from acidity or have a gas problem, then it’s advisable not to take garlic. In the case of ginger, some people might suffer from mild effects of heartburn, diarrhea and general stomach trouble. It has also been found that taking ginger during the menstrual cycle can increase bleeding. It is also known to cause skin irritation for a short period.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

  • 1. Avoid eating or drinking cold items.
  • 2. Intake a lot of fluids.
  • 3. Dont take cold showers
  • 4. Have a regular cup of hot green tea

How long does it take to recover?

Usually, if the cold isn't too severe, it will take 3 to 5 days to recover. If you are not feeling better within a week, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Common cold can be defined as a viral infection affecting one’s upper respiratory tract (throat and nose) characterized by mild fever, sneezing, body aches and headaches, congestion, cough, sore throat, runny nose and a general feeling of being unwell. It takes around 10 days to recover completely from the sickness. Although there is no defined treatment for a common cold, however, few remedies might ease the symptoms-

  1. Stay Hydrated: Lemon and honey mixed with lukewarm water, in addition to clear chicken broth, works therapeutically on congestion or dehydration. However, refrain from caffeinated sodas, coffee and alcohol; beverages that can aggravate dehydration.

Typhoid is an infectious bacterial fever with an eruption of red spots on the chest and abdomen and severe intestinal irritation, brought about by the Salmonella typhi bacteria. It can also be brought about by Salmonella paratyphi, a related bacterium that generally causes a less extreme sickness. The bacteria are stored in water or in the food by a human carrier and are then spread to other individuals around them.

There are many ways to avoid typhoid fever:

    • Carbonated filtered water is more secure than non-carbonated filtered water.
    • Request drinks without ice.
    • Use filtered water to brush your teeth and try not to swallow water in the shower.
    • Clean water can get contaminated again in case it is not put away securely.
    • Store the clean drinking water in a container with a little opening and use it within four hours.
  4. Staying away from raw fruits and vegetables: Maintain a strategic distance from crude foods grown in the ground. Since crude produce may have been washed away in water, maintain distance from products of the soil that you cannot peel, particularly lettuce. To be totally protected, you might need to stay away from street food completely.
  5. Cooking: Pick hot foods. Keep away from food that is put away or served at room temperature. Steaming hot nourishments are ideal. Also, in spite of all precautions, there is no assurance that the food served at the finest restaurants is safe for your health. It is best to stay away from foods served by street side vendors. If there is one disease which most people would definitely be affected by, it has to be the common cough and cold. It is not without reason that it is called “common cold.” When we look back though, common cold and cough was not so common. It is evident that it has become common due to the lifestyle and environmental changes and can be managed again by looking at how it used to be managed earlier.

Ayurveda believes that health is determined by the balance between the tridoshas in the body, namely vata, pitta, and kapha. Common cough and cold are caused by an imbalance between all 3 components. The type of cough, phlegm, congestion, etc., will vary depending on which dosha is predominant. People who repeatedly have attacks of common cold would be delighted to know there are remedies which are commonly available and can keep these attacks at bay. Read on to know more.

  1. Garlgling with salted lukewarm water soothes the throat and helps in relieving cough.
  2. Taking a combination of honey, lemon, and lukewarm water 3 times a day is very effective in preventing common cold.
  3. Drinking warm liquids like herbal teas and clear vegetable soups with garlic added soothes the throat and also provides antioxidant benefits against cold and cough.
  4. Boil some handful of tulsi leaves in a litre of water, strain and drink it through the day to get rid of cough and cold.
  5. Eating onion dipped in honey also can prevent chronic cough and cold.
  6. Boiling tulsi seeds and ginger in water and drinking this after straining also helps the throat.
  7. Drinking juice of betel leaves is another natural remedy.
  8. Add some salt to mustard oil and rub it on the nose and throat to get immediate relief.
  9. Similarly, a mixture of curd, sugar, and black pepper powder provides relief from cough and congestion.
  10. A mixture of cinnamon, honey, and pepper also helps people with cough and cold.
  11. Add a small quantity of asafetida (hing) to a glass of warm water and feel the relief in the lungs and throat.
  12. Boil water with jaggery and coriander seeds, strain and drink twice a day.
  13. A mixture of ginger and milk can be used in concentrated form to be instilled in the nose.
  14. A mixture of fennel seeds and clove powder mixed with honey provides great relief.
  15. Inhale the vapour of ladies finger from water in which it was boiled. This relieves throat infections and dry cough.

If baby is active and gaining wt. You need not to worry. Give him breast milk exclusively for 6 months in day time too. Cold is relieved on its own in 4 -5 days. If his nose is blocked, instill 1- 2 drops in nostrils.

My Son 19 months, keeps getting cold again n again. Almost every month. I take him to Dr. who mostly prescribes him 5 ml Advent suspension with other syrups. Is this a high antibiotic? Is there any other home remedy or anything better I can do for him?

There's nothing like high or low antibiotics. All antibiotics should be used judiciously as it may lead to resistance. I think your child is suffering from allergy. Best way is to avoid possible allergen like dust. Pollen etc. Put saline nasal drops frequently into each nostril whenever he has symptoms of cold.

For cold and cough I am suffering for blocked nose. please tell me a home made solution for relief. I do not want to use any medicine.

Hello, everybody, I am Dr Rahul Yadav, a paediatrician. Today we'll be discussing a very important topic with our home remedies related to children regarding cold.

So now, as you all know cold and chest congestion is very common among children and it might occur as many times as six to seven times every year. This is a pretty much normal for each and every kid. If you have a child you would have definitely experienced the agony of the child having cold and chest condition during any time during his childhood.

So, first of all, I would like to give you one piece of warning. A child with cold and chest congestion having sneezing, which might be increased intensity of sounds when the child is breathing in or out, signs of respiratory distress which might be increased, work of breathing increase rate or breathing or difficulty in even uttering normal words. In that scenario, you have to rush the child immediately go to the nearest doctor or to an emergency or hospital near your home. Another scenario would be if your child is suffering from asthma. In that scenario, I would advise you to take proper precautions and follow the instructions of your doctor regarding inhalers or nebulizers before trying any of the following home remedies.

So what actually can become very indiscreet. Home remedies can treat a child suffering from cold with no signs of respiratory distress with a few gurgling sounds while breathing.

Is it actually useful? Actually yes home remedies might even be better than medicines. Any common day-to-day cold and chest congestion. So what are the home remedies can do. One is the easiest would be to start honey. Honey has natural immune boosters which you can easily stage.

Can it be given to each and every child?

Yes, it can be given to each and every child but do not use it for any child less than one year of age. The reason behind it would be because of the incidence of bottling improxim in the honey which can be very deadly towards the less than one year of age.

You can even mix the honey with a little bit of lemon juice or ginger paste to make the child accept those Honey well. With honey you have to just pick up the caution in a case of a diabetic child and that you should not be over given the honey but in an otherwise, you can give the honey as many as times as you want. Maybe 1 psf every three to four hour. Another thing another home remedy that you can try out is humidification. Humidification can be done by either a cold humidification or humidification. Cold humidification is safer. Warm humidification is by the steam. Steam is very dangerous in a child as it can lead to burns also. So the better way is to close all the doors and windows of the house and thus put the steamer in one corner of the room and let the whole room be humid, that will help the child a lot. Another thing that you can do is to use normal sign nasal drops to keep the nostrils of the child clean. As the child's nose remains clean, the child will be able to breathe easier and would be much more comfortable and would even respond better to other measures. As you have to remember that cold in a child is ninety-nine percent because of viruses and that it generally takes seven to ten days for the treatment to average space and it's a natural course of the disease. So have to wait for that time you have to be patient. These are the common remedies that you can do which will elevate most of the symptoms that your child would be suffering from.
