Hard liquor contains alcohol which provides almost twice the amount of calories as in same quantity of carbohydrate but it is less than that contained in fat. Empty calories refer to foods like soda, soft drinks, chips, etc which provides only calories but no other nutrients.

Liquor has excess carbohydrates which get stored as fat in the body if not converted to energy by exercise / walks. It is also referred to empty calories as there is no nutrition associated with liquor. Sugar is another thing which is referred to as empty calories.
