Hello Doc, I am suffering from tinea and my doc has prescribed itraconazole tablets 200 mg along with the cream. I am a breastfeeding mother to 4 months baby. He is exclusively breastfed. Please advise if itraconazole is safe during breastfeeding and will not harm a baby?

In the dose prescribed, it will not harm your baby. Try to take the dose after giving feed to your baby so that there is a substantial gap before the next feed. It does enter the milk but will not affect baby adversely.

Iitraconazole is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.

Limited data is available regarding safety of itraconazole in breastfeeding. So its better you skip to some another antifungal. Consult your doctor for alternative.
