Does the periodic replacement of ceramic crowns will lead to root canal? (the avg life span is said to be 10 years)
Ask Free Question
that is a possibility because everytime you get replacement for the crown,we reduce little tooth structure. it may lead to canal opening for which pulp capping/RCT has to be done. but a proper fitting ceramic crown can stay for a life time. it is always better to get RCT done before crown placement if there are any chances that it may expose pulp in future. an X-ray is best to limit this problem.

Why do you have to change the cap periodically? If the grey portion is showing up you may go for. Zirconia metal free caps .so that there is no periodic replacement .if the food starts getting impacted. Within the cap, it may lead to further deterioration of the tooth which is below the cap. For getting a tooth into root canal treatment .there can be a lot of other reasons as well. This may or may not happen if the procedure is done carefully.

Hello ideally to be on safer side to avoid future complications we to root canal treatment before placing the crown. Because in order to place a crown we reduce the tooth structure and thus the sensitive part gets exposed and it can cause pain and sensitivity which will later require root canal treatment. So next if you are planning to get the crowns replaced get the root canal also done if ther is any sort of discomfort in the teeth. Thanks

Hi lybrate-user. It completely depends upon the condition of the teeth. If the teeth are healthy then re rctis not at all required but if just I case the hygiene is not maintained else the crown is bit short in that case marginal leakage may lead to re-rct.

Not always, means its not a rule, but all depends upon the response of the tooth and fitting of the crowns. Without RCT tooth with crown survives even 30 years also.
