Invisible braces are a form of orthodontic treatment for correction of misaligned teeth. Orthodontic treatment usually involves placement of metallic braces and wires over the front surfaces of the teeth, which are then used to apply gradual forces to move the teeth to more appropriate positions. Invisible braces could refer to braces that are applied on the inside surfaces of the teeth (Lingual Orthodontics) rather than the outside. This makes them more or less invisible from the outside. The treatment is technically more demanding, requires more laboratory work, and is therefore certainly much more expensive than regular braces. There are also other recent innovations in orthodontics involving the use of clear plastic plates {e.G. Invisalign (TM), Clearpath (TM), etc.} which are used in the place of metal brackets and wires, and, being clear, are minimally visible. These, however, are again a lot more expensive than regular braces, and, in addition, may not be suitable for all patients with dental malalignment. A somewhat more reasonably inexpensive option could be the use of white ceramic (rather than metallic) braces, though they may not be as invisible as some of the other options. You can discuss your options with your orthodontist, understand the benefits and limitations of each, and decide upon the one best suited to your needs.Â
