Pigmentary demarcation lines (PDLs) are areas of an abrupt transition from hyperpigmented to hypopigmented or normal skin colour. They are seen on limbs, face, and sometimes trunk. They are common in the black race. Pigmentary demarcation lines are fairly common in the Indian population, especially amongst the females. Hormonal influences could possibly explain the female preponderance. Aggregation of cases within families or among close relatives suggests a genetic background.
