Hello, I am 13 years old and I had an abscess that a root canal failed. My dentist told me that I will need an apicoectomy or else get it extracted. I have a few questions. 1: will an apicoectomy really save my tooth in long-term? 2: what causes an apicoectomy to fail if the infection has been removed already? 3: if an apicoectomy fails, is it the endodontist fault? 4: does it matter which endodontist will perform the surgery? Should I search for a good one?

Dear lybrate-user, I can understand your anxiety, however, your condition is too complex to give a fair opinion without all relevant data. The fact is that about 6% of all root canals fail. In these cases, a apisectomy is the next conservative treatment plant to save and retain the tooth. However, there are no guarantees that this procedure will not fail. Dental procedures are extraordinarily complex and there are multiple factors that can lead to failure. There is no dentist out there who can give a 100% guarantee of success. Any one who does that is just plain lying. Have confidence in your dentist and trust him/her .you will be fine.

You should get a clear idea of what apicoectomy is ,so that your questions are answered. Surgical endodontics, or apicoectomy involves raising a gun flap and removing the infected tissue inside the bone, beneath the tooth root. Once the infected tissue is removed, healthy bone formation should occur in that area. Chances of re infection are not likely. Any qualified endodontist should be able to do apicoectomy.
