SGPT by itself is not harmful, its a normal chemical made in the liver. It is released into the blood stream in larger amounts than usual when the liver is having trouble functioning due to injury, disease, or certain drugs. So you need to work about what your liver is doing or not doing, not the SGPT per se. To get a high SGPT to go down, the doctor must do other testing (bloodwork, ultrasonography, CT scan, MRI, even liver biopsy) in order to find out what exactly the liver problem is, then will treat that problem. The SGPT will go down once the liver recovers. If the liver is permanently damaged such as in cirrhosis due to viral infection or alcoholism, or due to cancer in the liver, the SGPT will stay elevated.
