Blackish pigmentation is due to melanin deposition, which could be generalised as in smoker's melanoma or endocrine causes of same. If focal it could be due to macule, nevi, melanoacanthoma or melanoplakia. Any recent onset pigmentation or changes in existing ones with thickening, increased size or ulceration is a cause of worry and it should be biopsied as it has a chance of developing a malignant melanoma Feel free to contact me directly if you want to discuss this further or share a clinical photograph.
